A big thanks to this forum!! This evening (after the autoparts stores were closed) I was told that the 85 300D would not start. My daughter, the primary driver of this wonderful vehicle, told me that the preglow indicator light had not been working reliably recently especially in the afternoon when she was finished with school. After checking that the light would not come on, I checked this forum and then prayed it was just the fuse strip and not a couple of glowplugs or the relay. The previous owner left a number of useful parts including this fuse strip. I replaced it and then turned the key to position 2. The indicator light came on and the engine fired up with no difficulty. Thanks.
