primer pump upgrade question
is there a trick to getting the old one out? what wrench size is it? did you have to use a stubby wrench?

The trick is to remove the diesel line that comes up next to the primer pump (to the rear of the pump). This is the line that is a slip fit. Then remove the fitting that the line slipped onto (use a deep 17 or 19 mm socket with a long extension). This will give you room to get your 1" or metric equivalent wrench onto the primer pump base and remove it. The new bosch pump takes a smaller wrench (17 or 19 mm).
Or, if you have the correct size crowsfoot (which I did not at the time) that would be the quickest).

I used a small vicegrip and some elbow grease. Since you won't be re-using it,it won't matter that you brake it. Clamp the vicegrip on the metal part of the primer pump. You have to play a little with placement since space is limited. Once clamped,you just try to hit it with the palm of your hand(carefull for those knuckles). I used a stubby standard open wrench to tighten, unfortunately I forgot the size. But it should be 17mm. Louis. |

Same here, used a pair of visegrips to remove the old one AND install the new one. THere's a crush washer that is installed between the hand pump and IP- I had to tighten carefully with the visegrips so that the new hand pump wouldn't get damaged (wrapped a piece of cloth around the part before gripping it, squeezing lightly to prevent the pump cylinder from going out of round.)

There is a plumber's tool called a "basin wrench" or "faucet wrench" that is the perfect tool for this job. If you know anyone who does their own in-house plumbing they should have this tool you can borrow.
This tool is designed to clamp and turn pipe in a tight space, as under a bathroom basin/sink. If you search under "primer" and user "Ken300D" you should find my experiences and suggestions on this job. Ken300D

It is pretty big (the old style one). I got a set of crows feet that went up to 22, I believe, and couldnt get a fit.
Ended up buying a stubby adjustable wrench that had a very wide opening, and that worked like a charm. I believe the new updated one went on with a crowsfoot wrench. JMH

i stopped by the home depot this morning.
somehow i did not think the crows foot would work. the 'mouth' of the 'foot' would not be big enough to 'eat' the bolt. it seems like it would need to get to it from the top. but if i could get to it from the top, i would not need the crows foot. so i bought a set of vice grips for $30. my tool collection is growing!
