240D owners, if you have your owners manual handy...

Can you tell me how much coolant an 83 240D holds. I do NOT have an expansion tank (at least, I do not see one). I added 2 gallons and it appears that I can add more. I do not have a dipstick measuring device...

I keep pouring into the top of the radiator and the level remains the same, very strange.

Yes, I am using coolant purchased from the dealer.

AC

Keep adding until it's full. It's just going into the engine now is why it looks like the level stays the same. This is coolant mixed with water right? Sorry, can't tell you how much it holds.

Yes...50/50 water and coolant

Thank you...I did drive the car about 20 miles before I started to add more. How long does it take to fill the engine?

Thank you...

I would watch the level closely for a couple days and see if it "burps" more air out of the block...... might help to squeeze the hoses to try to get it to burp the air out too. Then if the level is down just add a little more. You probably have it filled and the air out if you drove it that far..... I think the 240 is pretty easy to change the coolant on.

4 banger

Anthony, expect to add 10.5 qt. of mix to an empty system. This is the spec in the Chilton's book

The tips were on the button. Sometimes air gets trapped and gives false reading.

So, if you don't mind me asking, did you buy a 240D after you bade farewell to your 300D wagon?

Give some description of it!

So, about 2.5 Gallons...thank you!

Unkl300D, I did in fact sell my 300TD. The 240D is the new kid on the block. I did post a previous topic with all of the details, but basicically, the car is in fantastic cosmetic condition, 1 owner (A Nasa Engineer) with at least 2 inches of records. Included in the records is 2 complete warranty books with every stamp as well as a 3rd that is only just started. In the service books, there is at least 100 entries, written by the owner, of various sorts. Absolutely amazing!

The car has 314K miles but feels very strong...

So, I mentioned to Shane that the Bay Area guys shoud get together for a morning coffee...I think the Warden is from the area as well.

Anyway, it looks like the 300SD is on its way to the Netherlands (as well as the 300TD). I am selling the 300SD for what I paid for it, even though I put in brand new Billstien shocks, full service (every fluid) and a valve adjustment as well as 4 BRAND new Pirellis 4000 tires. Oh well, it pays to play. The car is in FANTASTIC condition cosmetically and mechanically. But, I do not have room for both. I love the 240D...an encounter with true dieseling!

Anthony

romansek, do all '83s lack the expansion tank?

Thank you romansek...do you know if this is for cars without an expansion tank, or the W123s in general. If memory serves, W123 300Ds have an expansion tank.

Thank you again for taking the time...

Anthony

1974 to 1983 10.5 qts.

I suspect no expansion tanks in later models up to 83.

Somebody asked me why I was making daBenz "do the hula" while I was changing anti-freeze. I said "this d**n engine needs a lot of burping." And it does, to the tune of almost 2gal if I don't burp it. 240D is a bored out 220D, so burp it. And you already know that if you don't have an expansion tank then you fill the radiator to just above the fins so the tank top takes up the expansion without losing antifreeze out the overflow tube.

My 300SD...

I am into the car for a bit over $10K with tax and registration.

After I purchased the car, I put:

Cost of Car- $8900
4 New Billstiens HD- $240 (Parts only, Mr Diesel installed for free)
4 New Pirelli P4000- $347
Valve Adjustment- $80 (I did not have Mr Diesel do this, so I paid)

I want $9,500 for the car...

The car has been serviced and need nothing! The AC servo was replaced with a metal type. I have every record after the first 50K, this was dealer stuff. Ca Blue plate car...immaculate condition! 130K miles. I took one long trip to LA, no problems!

This price is much, much higher than all of the other SD out there I am sure. This car is for someone who wants a brillaint car, not a project.

At this price, it may not sell very quickly as most buyers are willing to pay less and 'restore' the car themselves...at least my wife thinks I am trying!!!! So, now I have a choice of cars every morning!

Anthony
