190D Won't turn off and no Stop Lever!
Not mine, but the one I sold to a friend. They called and said the '87 190D won't stop. I said not to worry, but fill up and meet us at soccer.
Long story short: It won't stop and there is NOT a shut down lever at the IP. Now yes, I know what one looks like. I've used it many times before on my old '75 300D. There is nothing here to shut off. We finally got it to shut down by stalling it by shifting from reverse to forward quickly. Help! I've told them I can help them find a way to shut it off untill we get it fixed. |
Block off the intake air with a board or something similar. Starving it of either air or fuel is the only way to shut it down, and since there is no Stop lever, you're left with only one option... air.
Be sure to check all of the vacuum lines to and from the injection pump. The shut-off feature is vacuum controlled, and it is likely that one of the vacuum lines has either come off, or is leaking severely. |
Duh!:o
I didn't think of air. Is there not a shut off lever on the OM602? |
My OM602 turbo had a shutoff lever, but I guess the non-turbo doesn't. Very interesting.

It has to have one. My 601's stop lever is deep in there below the intake manifold. I can barely reach it with my bare fingers, using a screw driver or such would make it much easier. The picture in the owners manual shows a stop lever from a 617 that clearly says STOP on it. The actual lever on the car is just a black one with no STOP printed on it. It was 2 years after I got the car that I found the damn thing and tried it out... IT WORKS! :) So maybe this 2.5 NA is the same way?

190D22, I just remembered that the owners manual for my 2.5 Turbo showed two different styles of stop levers. One that was red and clearly marked STOP (what my engine had), and one that you described... black and not marked. My owner's manual covered the 2.5 NA and the 2.5 Turbo.
So... I think that mplafleur's friend does in fact have a stop lever, it's just hidden somewhere. But then again, maybe not. |
OK, so where to look? I would guess between the IP and the block. I didn't see anything. I'll go over and take pictures tomorrow.
|
I don't know how the intake headers are shaped on the 2.5... but where mine splits in half and the big opening is where my button is. I can take a pic if ya like.

Roy, I will try to send them your way for the permanent fix. |
I wish I still had the owner's manual for my 190D... I would have taken pictures of both stop levers.
Maybe someone with their owners manual can take pictures of the description, and of their engine. |
Its there (2.5 non-turbo), hidden by the injector lines ,

Here you can see I can just barely reach the thing...
|
That looks fairly obvious. If I missed that, I'm blind or it's not there.
|
It took me a bit to find it even today! It's tucked away deep in there.
