My comment about Chiltons was not specific to MB. I've seen Chiltons manuals on various cars since I was a kid sweeping my Dad's Independent shop floor. I've never seen one that was worth much more than something to kindle a fire with on a cold morning.

I say this as a general comment about the overall manuals. I'm sure that there are SOME things in there that are useful.

In the fifties and sixties when there were not very many makes and models, the Motors manual was pretty helpful. Chiltons tried to be like Motors, but came up way short.

The Chiltons manuals that are written for a specific car, rather than a general manual for ALL cars, are a LITTLE better, but still too general to be much good.

All this IMHO.

My $0.02,

Well, the Chilton's got me through the oil change process without having to come here to bug you guys with "yet another oil thread."

N8Scafe,

Is you 240D a 115.117 or a later model?

I don't know of any fuel shutoff in the dash. The actual fuel shut off mechanism is in the injection pump and is either manually or vacuum operated. There is an engine oil line in the dash that is connected to the oil pressure gage that could leak and cause a fire. I agree that the fire problem has no relation to the starter/ringgear problem

I looked at your posts and couldn't determine whether you have an auto or manual transmission. The ring gear and flywheels are quite different. To replace the ring gear on a manual transmission flywheel, you put the ring gear in the oven to expand it and it will shrink tightly on the flywheel.

I don't always believe what the manuals say. The MB repair manual for my old 190D said the engine had to be removed to remove the oil pan. I proved this untrue more than once. I also took out the crankshaft without removing the engine.

Well, the VIN starts with 123 123. Also, it's a manual transmission. I don't remember exactly what they said it was that caused the fire now, it's been too long and I don't keep good enough notes on the maintenance of this thing. That's something I need to start working on, I know.
