Talking Introductions.....

Dang, you guys are the whizz bang of diesels. I've been scouring this site for diesel info. Here's why...

I recently traded my trusty 85 BMW 535i for a Mitsubishi 2.3 l Turbo-Diesel pickup. I know you guys are M-B diesel heads but just wondering ifyou wouldn't mind helping this rice-burner out with a little advice!

Well here's the scoop: The truck runs like crap. First gear (stick shift) floored it takes 7 seconds to reach 2nd gear. Top speed was 75 on the freeway driving home after picking it up. Cold hear the turbo wining. When idling it smokes like Winston Churchill (white smoke, smells like diesel exhaust). VERY EMBARRASSING AT STOPLIGHTS!!

Once home, I thought I would do the typical stuff on it to try and tune it up. I purged air out of the fuel filter housing (there was none). removed the inlet after the turbo to see if air filter or turbo was clogged or frozen. No change in running or smoking.

Removed the timing belt cover to check timing. Everything lines up on TDC. Noticed that the "silencer shaft" belt was in peices and fried. One of the silencer shafts seems to have a seized bearing. I do not think this would affect running condtion however.

Timing belt was ok, but seemed a tad loose to me. I will replace today and get a new silencer shaft bearing and belt and replace.

My next Anywhoosit, does anyone have any suggestions for me to check to get this little guy running right again? Thanks a bunch!! I REALLY appreciate it!!!

White, diesel-smell (a straight from-the-pump smell) smoke is raw (not injected) fuel being burned in a low pressure environment. There's only a couple of ways for that to happen. I'd guess you've got a leaky injector or possibly, an exhaust valve not sealing up quite right. I'd pull the injectors and have them tested first.

Be sure to tell us what you find out.

Thanks guys....

Thanks a bunch guys. Injectors seem to be the next logical item. I've got a new timing belt on on order. I'm going to put that on and then wiggle the IP back and forth to see if that changes anything...then I'll remove the injecotrs and then have them tested. I'll let you know what happens.

BTW, I used to have a 240D when I was in college. I miss the hell out of that car. I used to scare the living bejesus out of my girlfriend by driving it around town (and around 90 corners!) with my foot all the way to the floor blowing black smoke all over town)

Damn, those were the days!!!!!

I'd buy another one if I could find one! What a great interior it had. Solid as a rock too.

Anyhow, I'll let you know what happens with the mitsubishi.

If you like big BMW gas turbos (500+hp), check out my web site at http://www.745i.com

best regards,

Scottie,

A compression or blow by test will tell you a lot about the condition of an engine.
