trailing arm replacement

iwll be replacing the left rear trailing arm on my 83 300sd within the next week or two. i am pulling one of a car in a junkyard so i will be needing to replace the bushings. my question is should i do both sides of the car since i have to drop the sub frame. (bolts are seized and on is in backwards. im not sure if replacing one sides bushings without doing the otherside will make it ride differently. any info would be greatly appreciated.

My bushings are bad also

Hello kmaysob
I am replacing the rear trailing arm bushings on my 85 300SD. The left are bad, the right are iffy.
For the cost of bushings, I am doing both.
Replacing one sides bushings without doing the other side, can make it ride differently.

Please...

Let me know how hard it is to get the old bushings out. I can't decide whether to try it or let my ind. repair shop do it. Thanks.

Some are easy, a PITA 3, others are hard, a PITA 7.....
Depends:
#1. How much rust falling in my face?
#2. Are the bolts seized in the bushings?
#3. Do I need to cut every bolt off?
#4. When I press out the old bushing, is the arm rotted out?

Trailing arm bushings are gold-plated PITA even without cutting bolts (which BTW, I do not know how you would do without setting your car on fire).

On the wagon, it is lots and lots of work to get to them, 20 minutes to replace all the bushings and then lots and lots of work to put it all back together.

Chassis w/o hydropenumatic suspension are accordingly less of a PITA...maybe down to a bronze PITA.

Yon need a spring compressor and a bushing press (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=38335).

Why are you dropping the subframe?
You can cut the bolts and drop the trailing arm.

your choice

you are asking a personal question...
On my car, yes..
On a customer car, only if I can prove it is needed.
