Sometimes no glow light; new plugs already

Hey, I used the search and could not find the answer, but I am sure it's there. Every now and then the glow plug light will not come on. The plugs are all brand new, and the car will not start (indicating that one is not faulty). The problem first started in cold weather, but the engine was still warm (stopped for dinner). I have gotten the light to come on via repeated reset using the jey (off then on), but am worried that the problem might worsen and get me in the wrong place at the wrong time (e.g. during bank robbery). Any suggestions or references to another thread? Thanks.

Bad GP relay.
Key switch defect.
Bad wire connection.

I am fighting the same thing...

My glow light illuminates ~80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, I need to on/off with the key, then I am OK. Car is 83 240D

GPs were replaced at 296K in 2002. Car now has 315K.

1) I tested the GPs 2 ways.
- resistance in the socket holes after I pulled the plug in the relay and bridged the holes (not sure how to describe this as my mechanic did htis for me), .-6-8 ohm for all 4.

- Put one end of a 'contraption' on the battery and another on the exposed part of the glow plug and a light lit up on the contraption. Again, the mechanic did this.

All seemed OK.

Next, I will look for loose connections and change the key tumbler ($105- the key turn is getting 'notchy' and I do not want to get stuck unable to turn the key.)

After that, I will replace the relay.

I will keep you posted on my findings...

AC
