350SDL (603) Oil Filter - Where Do The Copper Washers Go That Come With STP Filter?

I bought a STP S4536 OIL FILTER. It comes with two copper washers, one smaller than the other. I don't see any copper washers when I remove the Mercedes oil filter in the car now.

Does anyone here know where these washers go?

Thank you.

One is for the drain plug, the other is likely not used on your perticular car.

I miss Clearwater, pretty place..

And just for curiousoty, does that filter you just bought have "Made In Germany" on it anywhere at all? Last STP I bought did(only reason I bought it).

Wolf,

It says made in India.

I'm having low oil pressure problems, trying various solutions.

I am returning the STP filter.

Thank you.

MANN, Hengst, or Knect are approved filters and made in Germany. Bosch is made in India and NOT approved for oil filters. The STP is probably made at the same factory, don't use it.

The smaller copper washer is not used on 60x engines.

WIX makes a very good oil filter for these cars. Not cheaper, though.

The extra copper washer is for the center bolt on W124 chassis oil filter housings -- the center bolt comes out on those. Mine doesn't, makes changing the filter a pain. Siezed, and I have no intentions of trying to get it out.

Talk to your indy mechanic -- I believe the oil pressure relief valve is in the oil filter housing on that engine (may not be, though) -- if it is scored or the spring died, that will account for the low oil pressure, and it will be linely MUCH cheaper than an oil pump!

Peter,

That washer is too small to fit on the top of the center rod, between the 13 mm hex head and the "top plate". I've tried. I don't believe that smaller washer is used on 60x engines.

Only the larger washer is used. What I usually do is put the new washer on the oil filter rod and use the one I take off the rod and rotate it to the drain plug. What we really need is two larger washers.

Perhaps this is the real cause of your low oil pressure problem.

I'm not absolutely sure, but you might try using one of the German filters recommended above (Bosch is NOT German any more) to see if this solves your oil pressure issue.

I agree on German filters 100%. I asked him about it because the last STP I bought for an OM617 was stamped Made In Germany and identical to the Hengst I had used last time.
Kinda nice being able to buy them localy.

Shame about Bosch, they were (mostly) made by Champion Labs in the US for my VW's, as are (most) in the STP box. I've cut them up and they compared favorably to Mann and Mahle, OEM German for VW diesels. Funny how a given brand of filters can be from so many different locations depending on what motor it's for.
