Re: Mercedes French? I think not.
Quote:
"Emil Jellinek had good contacts with the worlds of international finance and the aristocracy and became increasingly active as a businessman. In 1898, he began to promote and sell Daimler automobiles - in particular, within the higher echelons of society. In 1899, DMG supplied Jellinek with 10 vehicles; in 1900, he received as many as 29. "Jellinek demanded ever faster and more powerful vehicles from DMG. From 1899, he also entered these in race meetings – first and foremost of which was the Nice week – where he would race under his pseudonym, ‘Mercédès’, the name of his daughter aged ten at the time. Initially, he used the name not as an automotive brand name but merely as a team and driver designation. "At the beginning of April 1900, Jellinek made an agreement with DMG concerning sales of Daimler cars and engines. The decision was taken to develop a new engine “bearing the name Daimler-Mercedes”, thereby introducing Jellinek's pseudonym as a product designation. Two weeks later, Jellinek ordered 36 of the vehicles at a total price of 550,000 marks – a sizeable order even at today’s equivalent value of DM 5.5 million. A few weeks later, he placed an order for another 36 vehicles, all with 8 hp engines. "The first vehicle to be fitted with the new engine, a 35 hp racing car, was delivered to Jellinek by DMG on December 22, 1900. This first ‘Mercedes’, developed by Wilhelm Maybach, the chief engineer at DMG, caused quite a stir in the first year of the new century. With its low center of gravity, pressed-steel frame, light, high-performance engine and honeycomb radiator, it featured numerous innovations and is regarded today as the first modern automobile. "The Nice week in March 1901, during which the Mercedes vehicles were found to be unbeatable in virtually every discipline, attracted enormous publicity for Jellinek and the Mercedes. In March and August 1901, the 12/16 hp and 8/11 hp sister models appeared. Jellinek’s orders soon stretched the Daimler plant in Cannstatt to full production capacity. ‘Mercedes’ was lodged as a trade name on June 23, 1902 and legally registered on September 26. From June 1903, Emil Jellinek obtained permission to call himself Jellinek-Mercedes, commenting: “This is probably the first time that a father has taken his daughter’s name.”" __________ And yes, practically ALL of these cars were sold in France.... the marque was made famous on the French Riviera race circuit at Nice, as this article mentions. Thankfully, the car was not named for an engineer's daughter..... but was named for the daughter of an afficionado at France instead, who practically carried the fledgling car company on his shoulders, buying and selling the bulk of their production - as I have said. |

I stand corrected...Apparently, the HoF site is dead wrong...(jeeze, who can you trust these days?) and I took it at face value. I'd believe the DB site over anything else out there.
BTW, the DaimlerChrysler site also says that Emil Jellinek was Austro-Hungarian, not French.

Leo, Paris was motor city in those days.... with crazy Frenchmen going nuts over automobiles. They even hosted a Paris/Peking race sometime around 1921. And the modern word "Chauffeur" refers to professional drivers who also served as firemen, being the first on the scene at any fire carrying shovels with which most cars were equiped..... also carrying tanks of water, as many cars were steam powered.
Returning to topic, my first car was called the "Mercolator" because of sound the engine made..... had another I called "Rommel's Camel" - it was 2 tone brown and beige 114. |

I havn't decided yet. But Old Smokey, Old Leaky, or Money Pit are the top choices now.

My 300D is Lurch. This is because of the very harsh shifting that it used to have. Took 2 years to figure out it was a vacuum problem. But Lurch seemed appropriate as it lurched between gears to the point of whiplash.
300SDL is still searching for a name. Needs to be a good one though, cause the car is great.

Right now I'm considering calling my 300D "POS". Got problems again and I'm reaching the point of giving up.

See sig for my car's formal name. I gave the truck the name I did because the truck has the turning radius of an aircraft carrier.

I haven't named the other cars except mine and my mother's.
My mom's is "Queen Mary", due to the gigantic size. Mine is "Trinity", from the Holy Trinity, due to the shape of the hood star itself.

When my daughter was two she called our '82 300TD "the 'cedes" which evolved into Sadie. I have come to think of her as a kind old lady who takes car of us. Sadie the lady Mercedes.
