Just Got a 16-Valve...

Well, its not a diesel, and it was unexpected, but I'm going to taking delivery of a 1986 16-Valver soon. It's rough, but it'll work. Black pearl with the rare dog-legged 5-Speed. Just thought I would share my elation.

I'm excited, but she needs work. A lot of work. But it seems to drive okay, and the price is right, so, I can't turn her down. I have to save her.

Hey Warden, a "dog-legged first" tranny is the manual "standard H" transmission pattern but in reverse. 1st gear is down and to the left. It's used in racing for the down/up shifts are more direct. Afterall, when do you ever use first in a race? The gears on top are R 2 4. The bottom range is 1 3 5.

Congratulations! I am in the final stage of negotiating with the insurance company to have mine restored after my son was hit from behind while standing still. I turned the car over to him when he turned 16. I owned it from new (Euro car I ordered through a buddy that still lives in Munich), and had driven it 205,000 miles by then. Anyway, he has put every penny he has earned summers and in part time jobs into it. First we had the head off and rebuilt (long thread on that) then last summer had all the rust taken out. New floor pans, rebuilt a couple fenders. And then he got hit while standing still due to a traffic accident ahead of him on I-91 just North of Hartford by a guy driving alone in the HOV lane, which was unaffected by the accident. The guy must have figured he was going to get nabbed for driving alone in the car while in the HOV lane and decided to drive across the median (clearly marked as an area off limits, and littered with debris). Drove into the back of my son without applying the brakes. Did about $6,000 of damage by the insurance aduster's assessment. They wanted to total the car and I am still struggling to get them to rethink this. If the car was one year old, the same damage would not cause them to total the car, so the determination has nothing to do with the technical severity of the damage. It is a financial assesment, they are already agreeing to pay the cost to fix it, and I am going to fix the car, so I do not see what the issue is all about.

So, good luck, and enjoy the car! They are great fun, and unusually rugged. The head problem we had was my fault. I did not adjust the valves for more than 40,000 miles and I burned an exhaust valve. Other than that, the car has been bullet proof, which really surprised me. Jim

Nice. What needs to be done to it? A friend of mine has an '86 US model. Needs valve seals (smokes a bit) but runs great.

John, one of these weekends we'll meet up again. You'll see what she needs. How's the new Euro doing?

I just pruchased a 16v also. A 1986 with 87k on in pristine condition. I have not been back in the 300TD since. I think once you have been driving a diesel for over 20m years, a nice quick light car is a joy. Of course, I looked for the perfect second car. That included room for four, 5speed manual tranny, AC, electric indows and seats and a Benz. Also had to be under $10K.

The 16V is the answer.

If you are interested, I have a brand new 1986 2.3-16V sale brochure. I bought 5 of them from someone near me that had them in the original wrapper. Kind of fun to have.

PM me for info.
Henry
