It has several names, but I've always called it a track rod mount. There are 2 on the car and they're very popular.

this part seems to pull the wheel back and then when i stop it shoots the wheel forward. so i am wondering if it does this because that rubber is shot. i think that is what is causing the clunk when i drive off.

I've heard them called thrust rod bushings. Usually you end up replacing the whole thrust rod because they'll seize so bad they can't be adjusted any more. Usually you replace them in pairs. The big problem is then you need an alignment done, and you'll have other stuff that's seized or worn out and you end up practically rebuilding the front end to have something that you can actually do a proper alignment. Things along the lines of ball joints, tie rods, drag links, a-arm bushings, etc etc.

Actually the rods are probably OK -- we must move 50 of the mount kits for each track rod.

That about sums it up and in my opinion it is worth every penny. Not too bad $$ if you do it yourself. I guess it is one of the most common things I have had to do to the old ones that I have had the pleasure of messing with.

The rubber piece is the mount, It's packaged together with some hardware as a repair kit.

Sorry -- I thought I had made it clear that the rods are available separately and are thus not part of the kits. These are track rod mounts, not track rods.

Very often the adjuster on the rod is seized and can't be removed or adjusted, just a heads-up there for ya.
