rebuild the w124 V8...???
Anyone here ever rebuild the 4.0L V8? Saw a few high mileage (almost 200,000) 400E that caught my interest. Just thinking of the worst case scenario.

I've never heard of a M119 that needed bottom end work. The MB alloy block engines almost seem immune from cylinder wall wear - if treated with anything approaching normal maintenance.
Come to think of it I've never heard of a M119 that needed a valve job either. My M119 has 165K miles on the clock - it does not use a drop of oil between 6K oil and filter changes. You are more likely to have problems with electronics on these engines, Throttle actuators and wiring harness are common problems. A quick search will provide endless reading.. Tim |

I have been reading alot on this car. I found a few with 150,000+. Just wondering if it was an issue or not.

If the engine has been maintained (ie oil changed with some regularity) and not overheated, you won't wear out the bottom in less than 500,000 miles, and even then you will only need rings.
The bores have a silicon lining from differential deposition from the high silicon alloy (a Reynolds product). The bores are cooled so that the silicon in the alloy is preferentially deposited on the bore, then the holes are machined and the aluminum is acid etched (or electrolytically etched) away, leaving a nice, smooth, porous silicon surface. This wear at about 1/5 the rate of the old MB high nickel cast iron, and those lasted 500,000 miles before the rings needed work. I'd guess something like 2,500,000 miles on any of the aluminum engines. I've seen a few apart, and unless they got overheated or run out of oil until they siezed, the bores look new, completely unmarked. Usually minor or no ring wear, but they got new rings anyway. Impressive. Do the usual checks -- if there is no oil comsumption to speak of, and the engine has good compression, it's fine. Peter

There was one that mentioned oil consumption and blue smoke out the exhaust. Valve guide seals maybe?

Most likely, unless badly overheated, in which case the engine is toast.
