Question Can I ask an oil question without being violated???!!

Does anybody use Castrol RX Super Heavy Duty 15W-40 or Mystik JT-8 15W-40 in their diesels?

I am aware of the Delo/Delvac/Rotella/Amsoil/Mobil crowds and I'm not asking for a recommendation or what's best.

Has/does anybody use the two brands I mentioned? Thanks.

Dear Jim Dandy:

These 2 brands are not widely used by diesel owners because they are not readily available in many retail stores. However, they are just as good as any of the other listed brands. In most retail stores, you can buy Chevron Delo 400, Mobil Super 1300, Rotella T for about $6-7 per gallon, so if you can get the other brands for similar price range, then just go ahead and buy them.

Do not be obsessed with oil brands, especially when they are DINO OILS. If you want to pay for expensive synthetic oils, then Delvac 1 5W-40 is always the best choice, even though it may be quite hard to get them.

Eric

I figured Mystik wouldn't be too widely available, due to it being a regional brand (though it's more widely distributed than it used to be since it's part of Citgo now), but I thought Castrol RX would be just about everywhere (I see it in all of the stores here).

Since these are 15W40 I expect that they are Universal grade oils. This means that they are blended especially for diesels.

I agree with Eric about not getting hung up on brands, rather use the right weight and type. All of the universal grades are very good for the application. Although I have one brand that I consistently use, if it became hard to find for some reason, I would have no qualms at all in using any of the others if I found it cost competitive and readily available.

Good luck,

Larry & Eric:

Thanks for the replies. I didn't have any doubts about these being good oils, but after reading the inumerable Delo/Delvac/Rotella/synthetic versus dino/my-oil-is-synthetic-and-yours-isn't threads, I thought I'd ask if anyone besides me was using these oils.

With Mystik JT-8 being mostly a regional brand, I figured I might hear from a bunch of Okies, Texans, and Jayhawks. I guess not.

I haven't come across Castrol RX here in Oklahoma City yet. Mystik is everywhere and I don't use it. I have a friend that works at the Mystik plant in OKC. He thinks they have the best grease but he doesn't much care for the oil. He uses Mystik oil anyway since he gets a free case each year.

I have been using Castrol as above-noted for a long time now and have had no oil related problem. It is readily available at Costco in my area.

While MB recommends oil and filter change every 8,000 km., I do it at 5,000 km. interval -- a cheap preventative maintenance.

On the next oil change, I plan to switch to full synthetic Petro Canada Duron 5W-40 and extend my oil drain interval to 8,000 km.

They carry it at Autozone, O'Reilly's, Pep Boys, Wal-Fart, etc.

Thats strange. I have been in all of these stores and haven't seen Castrol RX. I generally shop on the south side of town, I guess I should look to the north once in a while.

84W123DT,

My 300D had Petro Canada Duron 5W-40 in it when I purchased it. I used same oil for a few intervals. Oil leaks seemed to steadily get worse and I would consume quite a bit on highway trips(70-80 mph). I switched to Pennzoil 15W-40 and after about 1000 miles my three oil leaks have stopped and my consumption is barely noticeable after a highway trip. I think the PC oil is very good but it wants to get past my seals/rings. FYI.

The Autozone on Broadway in Edmond, both Edmond O'Reilly's, Wal-Fart at 33rd & Broadway, and the Pep Boys on Memorial all carry it, as does Jackson Auto Parts on Britton.

Now OCCASIONALLY Wal-Fart won't have common weights of common oils, like when I'm needing Castrol GTX 10W-40 for my 420 SEL, but by and large they have most Castrol stuff.

Hmmm. I may not switch to it now. Thank you for you info.

Does anyone else have the same experience??
