DFW TX 300D Euro Manual FS
Ad from today's Fort Worth Startle Gram:
1980 Mercedes 300D 4sp cold a/c $1988 (817) 426-6688. I called on it just to confirm manual trans (It's true!). It has 2 tone upholstry, so it's pretty sure that it's a factory job, not a shade tree conversion. It's at some kind of an auto broker, so they don't know much about it.

Good morning Larry. Yep, too many cars here, so I've been thinning the herd a bit, but this one could be a good buy for someone.

Paul,
You just couldn't stand it could you? You just had to call. I understand totally. I thought about this several times yesterday. I've been wanting to come to Weatherford one Saturday and look for an old Army buddy of mine. If I can ever get time to do this I'll give you a call. Maybe we can meet for coffee or something. I hope everything is well with you and your family. Have a great day |

Yep, you're right, I just had to go look at it. When I called for directions and found out it was already sold, it was actually a relief. I guess it really is an addiction. I'm not actually in Weatherford any more. I got married and am now in Northeast Tarrant County (along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, so to speak). I still have the property in Weatherford, but don't live there anymore. The plan is to someday knock down the existing (small) house and build a proper house in Weatherford, but I dunno if that will really ever happen. I have breakfast on Sunday mornings at the Petro truck stop with a bunch of locals. Please look us up if you're around on a Sunday morning. Also, if you need somebody looked up in the Weatherford phone book, I would be happy to do that. By the way, you haven't told us about your side business. I bought a small utility trailer a wwhile back. Turns out it's made by the LB Mfg. Co. of Sumner, TX. I figure that must be your garage. G'Day

Paul,
I know that Iron Skillet Restaurant well. I used to stop for a bite when I drove to West Texas alot in the early nineties. My ol' 240D saw that parking lot a number of times. Yes, there are many trailer manufacturers out here. There is a large number of Menonite farmers in this area. About 15 years ago one of their Menonite friends moved here from Canada and built a small building and started making trailers. In that time it has grown from a small building to a regular plant with several acres of floor space. Many Menonite folks have moved into the area and work for him. About ten years or so ago, his brother moved in down the road from him and built another plant. In addition to those there are a number of very small operations where some Menonites work independently building trailers in shops that are very small. I expect that's where the LB came from. The two Large ones are PJ Trailers and Load Trail Trailers. Another medium sized one with a Sumner address is Buck Dandy. Any brand other than those three is a trailer that was built in a shop no bigger than mine. I don't think that there are any of them that are low quality. The Menonite folks work hard and take it seriously. They are impressive people. In the Winter, on many days, you can see a Menonite farm for miles. They believe in burning off their fields before planting. It makes no sense to me to turn what organic matter you have into smoke and I don't think that they are organic farmers, but that's their trade mark. Many of them are large scale farmers with really good bottom land. Of course everything here along the river is really good land. Any way it's nothing to see a 9 or 10 year old Menonite boy driving a $100,000 four wheel drive, articulated tractor to and in the fields. They seem to learn at a young age how to drive the tractor with one hand and talk with their buddies on a CB radio with the other. It's a very interesting community. It is more difficult than it used to be to look up people on the internet. If you have a Weatherford phone book, would you see if there is a Don Long listed? Thanks and have a great day, |

Mennonites have been moving to rural Colorado also. Interesting. Does it have anything to do with a court ruling a few years ago in ??(Ohio?) about how their children have to be schooled or something?

The Menonites here have their own schools. Most of the schools seem to be really good, but there is one of the schools that I believe is lacking. One of the schools teaches German and Spanish from the very beginning. All of them seem to learn to read extremely well which, of course, makes sense because part of their curriculum is learning the Bible.
As with any group of people there are different type of people within the group. Some of the groups are extremely impressive in their education and the way they live their lives. A few of them are, shall I say, less than impressive. Like any other group of people, they run the spectrum. Have a great day, |
