Again, what is the point? The already existing mechanical system does everything you are asking and it does it efficiently and reliably.

I was talking about the cost of redesigning the actual engine components (i.e., the head). I thought we were talking about converting from indirect injection to direct injection, which would require significant engine redesign.
On this issue I must agree with all of those who said: you want a DI engine in your w123? THEN GO AND BUY A NEW MB DI ENGINE AND FIT IT UNDER YOUR HOOD!!!

Well I am happy for you then. But mine is not very efficient
It drinks about 13 litres for 100 km (i don't know to convert to your measuring units, if someone can help please do (i am too tierd to find a convertor on the net it's 1 o'clock in the morning here ). And that is insane where a litre of diesel is about 2$ that means that I have to spend an average of 26$ for each 100km (which is more or less 60 miles). A gallon is about 4.5 litres as far as I know. Opinions please?

18mpg. You should start a new thread about that rather than everyone getting this topic derailed about fuel consumption.

I agree, that's why I own 616/7 engines. Personally, I will give up some efficiency for a computer free existence.

i dont know about you guys... but i would love to have one of the new cummings under my benz's hood. makes 500hp over 1800 fp of torque and its rpm range is under 3k. it makes its max torque at 1800rpm. I wouldnt mind having that, even if its rpms are quite low. Now with that, you could do something about that. Mill the deck a crapload and drop in a shorter stroke crank, or shorter rods. enlarge the bore so you get the same power, and you have a higher rpm limit because your R/S ratio is now square, or close to it.

That Cummins also weights 3,000lbs.

Personally, I'd want the Mercedes OM629.910 engine... V8 diesel, twin-turbo, 314hp @ 3600, and 538lb-ft @ 2200... in stock form. I think it's a few pounds lighter than the Cummins.

Old thread!
Anyhow getting back to the OP, the answer is yes.
A few years ago I did some modifying - butcher work - to my pre-chambers.
I drove out the pin / ball in the middle and then cut off the bottom.
Results? All bad! LOL. Harder to start, lower power, more noise. But no "cool D.I. sound" just ill sounding.
Was fun to experiment with as I had an extra set off pre-chambers to play with.

I remember going to Aruba back in 1999 and stopped at a local MB dealer. They had a W210 car with the in-line 5 cylinder diesel, direct injection and rotary injection pump. It was amazing! Yes it was a loud direct injection diesel but still as refined as it could be made at the time - with no computer! My dream car. I'm sure MB would never consider selling such a loud diesel in the USA- pitty! If one could get such a car today I think it would be a nightmare for replacement parts.

Guys are converting turbo om606 engines to DI by fitting DI injectors and aftermarket DI pistons, I'll see if I can find a link

Oh thats way too much work. Just put a stuck open injector in your engine. You'll have a modified prechamber in no time.
