Valve adjustment tools - Photo please

Can someone please post a photo of the special bent spanners for adjusting the valve clearances on a W123 300D.

Should I buy a new rocker cover gasket or is the rubber one re-usable?

Hi and good luck... here are some sources

You can see a picture of the wrenches in the www.************************ catalogue
and
the www.**************.com website. they also give excellent directions with their wrenches on doing the job. He says that you do not need the 3rd wrench as suggested by Mercedes. I bought his with the directions but haven't tackled the job yet.

repairflix.com also has a good video on doing the valves.

Good Luck

The valve cover gasket rarely needs replacing. As long as it is flexible enough to get off and clean, it will work as well as a brand new one.

Remove the gasket from the cover carefully and wipe the inside of the groove of the gasket with a rag on a screwdriver. Clean the mating surface of the valve cover with a rag and the mating surface of the head in the same manner. Push the old gasket back in place on the valve cover and lower the whole shebang in place being careful that the gasket stays on the valve cover properly. Do it this way and I will give it a 99.9% chance of sealing.

If for some reason the gasket is too brittle to clean then it will be time to replace. I would almost guarantee that this will not be the case.

Hope this helps,

That's what I've been doing with my gasket everytime I've had the valve cover off and it's been off four times since I've owned my M-B. I brush on a little Permatex on the gasket to head surface for a little insurance. It hasn't leaked yet.

Not a bad idea. I use Hylomar.

I would not use ANY sealant on the valve cover gasket. If it is not brittle, it will seal without it. If you put a sealant on it, you risk tearing it the next time you pull it off.

I suppose people have habits from American car valve cover gaskets. In the past most American valve covers have been sheet metal and the gaskets are hard to seal. Especially on V engines where the cover is mounted at an angle where oil is puddling at gasket. On the MB's the cover is absolutely rigid and will not flex. It seals like a Mason jar. Plus most of the engines are inline, thus no puddling at the lower portion because it mounts horizontally.

Good luck,

I agree that any type of sealer that hardens/cures should not be used. Hylomar is a non-hardening type sealant that I've been using for years... it works great !

Re: Home Bent Picture

Thank you Mr Goodfahrt, leathermang, and especially Coachgeo, whose link gave me the photo I needed, complete with a rule, so that I can make them myself.

I take it that they are both 14mm Open End spanners.

Thanks also to LarryBible, lietuviai and Brad123D, for their comments on the gasket.

thats the picture my link up above was intended to take you. Hope you didnt have to search around for it.

Anyway, does anyone know how to insert a photo in a post that is already on this site. For example you cant use the [IMG] method. I know you can uploading it onto your own computer then dowloading it back into the post you want it but thats sorta not good for the health of the bulletin board.

That is a picture of leathermang's wrenches. I'm actually in the process of making a "few" sets right now. (I got a good deal on a 24 set of 14mm Stanley wrenches )

I don't know how to make the picture show again from the same host, I can get the URL like you did but surrounding it with the img code doesn't seem to work.

The Permatex sealer that I use is a non hardening type as well. Yes, my use of sealants stems from many years of working on American cars.

Is your new image of the 617 which was for sale on Ebay?
