1st Mercedes purchase

Here's the scoop, my bother works at a Ford Dealership, and someone is trading in a 1976 240D. The Dealership is giving the guy $300 for the trade in and I can buy it for $100 over that since my Brother works there.

I have seen polaroids of this car and it looks very nice. Although there were no pics of the interior, if it is on par with the exterior it should look nice also. I was told that all it needs a starter solenoid. I was also told that the guy bought it two years ago for $2000.

I kind of thought that for $400 I don't have anything to loose. I have just heard that the 240D is greatly underpowered. Should I avoid this model completely and wait for a 300D or snatch it up for that price?

Please give me your opinions on the 240D and what I should look out for. I have never owned a Mercedes before so I am a complete NOOB!

Please emerse me in Mercedes knowledge, any and all opinions on this car is accepted.

Thanks in advance.

Get that car! For $400 you can't go wrong. It may need some work but the price is right especially if it's in decent shape.

Gads! Even if you do have to dump another $1000 into it, you'll have a good car for the money. But make sure it's not a rust bucket, or it's not worth anything more than you pay for it. Check the rear quarter panels, around the wheel wells, trunk floor, suspension mount areas, ect. If it's rotted out, but runs and goes ok, consider it a good work car, but not worth putting anything else into it.

Is W123 the model? What model is the '76 240D?

It has 180,000 miles, and it's white is all I know. Not sure if it's manual or auto.

Yes it's the chassis model, '76 is a lighter and smaller 115 chassis.

The 115 is my favorite for looks, but I do like the roomer 123 and it's not that slow and is fine around town and on the back country roads. It's just not an 80 mph interstate cruiser or a jack rabbit from the light.
