So long Guys and Thanks
Thanks for the ride guys. I am getting out of the 240d business in exchange for a smooth, powerful, quiet Chevrolet Impala. It has all of the refinement that the 240d lacks plus room for my growing family. It has everything except character. I guess that is what I will miss the most about my little 240. I had a neighbor to comment “nice car but it‘s not really you.
My Mercedes was my dream car from the 80’s that I was far from being able to afford. The diesel was what the more affluent of my parent’s middle class neighborhood drove in the early 80‘s. I waited until my dream car was old enough for me to afford, and enjoyed every minute of my 4 years with it, save the evaporator replacement. I would have not been able to afford to drive this car had it not been for the technical advise for this forum. Now he is on to another owner. One who did not even blink when I proudly handed over the two boxes of records that showed every detail of service done to the car right down the annual brake system flushes. One who was not interested that the car has been pampered with regular fresh oil every three thousand miles of its 343k miles. The new owner, the first one to show up with the cash , seemed to only be interested in the almost flawless appearance and a bit disgruntled that I would not come off of the $1100.00 that I was asking. You can have my pin, I doubt I’ll be back. It’s on now to more practical things like a generic car that frees up Saturdays for football practice, Soccer and room for car seats. I wonder if I will ever be passionate about a car again. Nothing on the road today makes me think so. This is the first car that I regret having to sell. Quietly oozing down the road, Jackson

I'd bet you'll be back, judging by the last line in the last paragraph.
I think about selling out at times and then I go for a drive. Hmmmm..think I'll keep it. Happy trails and cya soon.  Cheers, Bill

The Impala is a good car. But one thing you will notice is that the dashboard is extremely long, and the chassis is not very solid. Just going through puddles after a storm alarms the heck out of you. It feels like the water is shooting through the cabin via the wheelwell.
 Power is good, and economy is similar to a 240D. Runs on regular gas. The seats although thick, are rock hard. There is no support. I hope no long trips will be taken in it. The plastics are typical GM quality. But the V6 seems a compliant engine. You are going to miss your Benz like you'd never believe possible. Next time, get an S-Class.

gave up on the most reiable Benz made????
Boy, just you wait until the "service engine soon" lights up and you head to the dealer and they scratch their heads cluelessly-my wife's '03 Vibe has been there 3 times for the same problem. The old Benz just clanks on down the road, and doesn't look like it just rolled out of a rental lot-for $1100, I think I'd have kept it as an insurance policy/hobby!

Not everyone's family situation permits them to take the time necessary to maintain our old cars. These things are only cost effective when you DIY, and if spouse/child/work commitments won't let you keep it up, I can understand bailing out for something that demands less time. Still, I too think he'll be back.

Well, enjoy the time with your family. You won't enjoy your car as much, but if you have to choose between enjoying a car and enjoying a family, I suppose you have to choose family.
However, don't lose hope. The kids will get older and start taking care of themselves, you'll retire from your job, and there'll be a handful of w123's still rattling around, just waiting for you to pick back up again. One day you'll be thinking, "boy, I'm just not as busy as I was when my kids were young and I was still working full time..." Then you'll see an ivory 240D with a for sale sign rumble gently down the road, and you'll buy it. I know your kind. Have fun in you point A to point B car, and best of luck. Now this really ticks me off. I just searched your posts, and you did not offer the car for sale here. Don't you know there are people on this board looking for 240Ds? You probably could have gotten more money for it, and found a new owner who would love the car as much as you did if you had posted about it here first. I was free this weekend and could have easily gotten to NC with cash in hand.
