Leak fix for transmission kickdown solenoid (pics) - new part # found

I am finally declaring victory on my kickdown solenoid leak!

I had replaced the crush washer and o-rings twice and even bought a new solenoid - and still a very slow but persistent leak. Not enough to be dripping every night, but no matter how much I wiped or tightened (broke the first solenoid!), the bolt and solenoid would always have a drop ready to go the next day (see first pic)...

New part number found!

Welcome new part #A 000 304 20 90 - a new big brass bolt that runs through the solenoid into the tranny... physically very different from the original.

As a nice bonus - the new bolt thingy comes with all the proper o-rings already installed!

no leaks!!!!!

After two days of my normal commute and checking both nights - bone dry - finally!

For orientation - that black stripe directly below the solenoid is the transmission pan gasket. The copper colored metal in the bottom right corner is the transmission pan.

is this kick down from your 84SD? I'm not familure enough with the car to look at the pics and know whar the heck on the tranny these pics are taken. Is that the Bowden cable's connection on the tranny side?

yes 84SD

Let me try to give you an orientation

If you slide under the car from pretty much dead center on the front passenger door, slide right past the exhaust pipe you are going to see the transmission pan (pretty big). Behind that, the drive shaft connected to the back of the tranny.

On the passenger side, near the rear of the tranmission pan, just above the gasket line of the transmission pan is the kickdown solenoid (maybe the size of a black bloated zippo lighter - which has that big brass bolt thingy running through it). The head of the brass bolt thingy faces the rear of the car.

hope that helps

Do you know how much NM are you suppose to torque this bolt down?

Thanks,

14 lb ft

I had posted that question previsously and someone responded 14 lb ft (or is it ft lb?)

I went fairly snug / tight using a ratchet, but from my past experience, if you gorilla it, you're going to break the black solenoid! Better to start "snug" and see. I doubt you'll need much effort.

You should be able to get it from the forum sponsor, or a dealership parts department (either in person or online).
