Serious fuel leak on W210 solved

While driving around town yesterday I noticed an aroma in the car that wasn't pleasant. Upon my next startup I got a low battery warning. Hmmm, I thought, this could be interesting, low batt and fuel smell. When I got home, up went the hood and I had fuel everywhere, including the alternator. Upon inspection it seemed the leak was from under the cover for the injectors. "leaking return line" I hoped. Upon removal of the injector cover, ALL SIX injector wells were full of fuel So I got out a small syringe and some injector return line and sucked all the fuel I could out of each well. I started the car to look for the leak and found the plug on the last injector spurting fuel. What a relief A trip to NAPA in the trusty 124 and $1.09 later I had a new cap and the leak was stopped. If I had not been familiar enough with the car to investigate myself and took it to a stealership, I can only wonder what I would have paid for this repair Lesson learned: what at first may appear catastrophic many times is in fact quite minor.

Love it when it works out that way! You saved yourself a couple hundred bucks, too. Not bad.

HOLY MOLY !! That's a lot of leaking fuel, Cal! Glad things like this are easily corrected. I had the same issue on my car last week. I couldn't see it leaking but replaced the return lines and no more fuel odor

I want to keep an eye on it for a while. Can the car be driven with the injector cover off? At least until the injector wells dry out?

On mine all of those wells were full and it was running along the low spot on the left side and out the EGR(?) pipe opening. It got on the fan, the alternator, exhaust manifold, water pump and over onto the bracket for the fuel filters. When I opened it up I wasn't sure where it was coming from. I got a spurt from the leak several times a second at idle, I can only imagine what it did at 60mph! Must have been a constant stream!

"Drying out" might not work very well, as diesel fuel is oily and won't evaporate like volatile fuel such as gasoline. I'd consider pressure washing. Steve
