had mine up to over 100 on the highway - just to see what happened

no soot or smoke came out so i guess none is present, although i may try to do an uphill 3rd gear high rev italian tuneup to see for sure.

92 300D 2.5 I just filled my tank this evening and avg. 31.3 this is down from my avg of ~32.6, my guess is that now I'm using the AC everyday this is hitting the numbers. My best tank was 33.9 (almost made 34) on a 3 hr trip, followed by driving around DC on a 1/4 of a tank. My drive to work is 46 mile each way and 28 mile is interstate where I average ~80MPH with a max of ~100. (of course I get a ticket in my wifes Honda 65 in a 45)
I have yet to take my yearly trip to Indiana which will be the real test. (12 hr ride) I really enjoy driving the car

Three weeks ago I drove 2300 miles, from Washington state to Houston, with speeds in the range of 55-65, got 31 mpg. the car was loaded pretty heavy with all kinds of office junk.
1977 240D, manual with no AC and a new motor with about 30K on it.

Smile Ditto on the 2.5 Turbo

Chris & Grdenko,
I too would like to chime in here and share my experience with the 2.5 Turbo. Last summer my wife and three children embarked on a +5,200 mile return trip from San Antonio, Tx to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Never missed a beat; gave us an average of 33.4 U.S. mpg while driving between speeds of 70 to 75 m.p.h. One fill-up gave us over 35 mpg! What a great road car too.
Currently, we are able to obtain between 26 and 29 mpg trying to move around our recent Texas address - Houston. For anyone familiar with the area, that means plenty of stop and go traffic and delays.

Best mileage I ever got, 31MPG, was at a steady 50 MPH in my '80 300SD. Average mileage is about 27.

daBenz likes 60mph. Average 38mpg, high of 42mpg. Never go below 1/2 tank, and #2 fuel with PowerService grey bottle. Just summertime touring, usually 600-800mi per day on the two lanes. daBenz is highly allergic to the interstate.

How fast did he say you were going in your 240 wagon? I've owned two of those (89 w/ 5-speed, and a 93 w/ auto) and I don't think those could break 85mph even with a tailwind.
Ha ha...I guess I don't have that problem with my 740. I have to use the cruise control to prevent my speed from accidentally climbing past 80--it's so fast and smooth that you just don't notice it, esp. because you don't feel like you're pushing it at all.

As for fuel econ speeds, I always heard it was the lowest speed at which you could use top gear w/o lugging, or just after an auto trans shifts to top gear. Diesels don't really lug, so that's pretty low--between 40 and 50 on most cars I've driven, which is right in the same area as what you guys have been saying.

Last year I was logging a lot of miles with an 80 240D and an 85 190-2.3. Sometimes between fill-ups I would drive like the Mobil economy run, other times I would just do what I wanted. Didn't seem to make any difference.

The 190 has a 5-spd and the MB Econometer. This gauge seems to say that sometimes you're better off in a lower gear, as long as you're not accelerating or climbing a hill.

Anybody know exactly what the Econometer measures?

The SDL seems to get 23 - 24 MPG no matter what. I've tried cruising along at 70 MPH for a 300 miles, I've tried beating it around town... nothing I do seems to make any difference in fuel consumption.

I'm not complaining... 24 MPG in a 2 ton sedan is just fine with me... especially when diesel is $0.25/gallon cheaper than gas.

The original window sticker says 23 city / 24 highway.
