Why not just go to the dealership and get keys already cut for $20?

My dealer actually sent me over to a local locksmith(in Bellevue Wash.) that has the blanks and the equipment to make 'em. Cost me something like $40 per copy. So some do have the abilty to make them, and cheaper than the dealer. But of course they're not "official" Mercedes blanks.
BTW, I think his eyes were already a bit skewed ![]()

My local dealer just cut me two keys for $19.82 each. There not cheap but $40 each is a little high.

Gosh, unless I have lost my mind... no bets on that possibility please... I went to the local Ace Hardware... and they had a key that would work...and cut it ... for about $5 four years ago for my 1981 wagon.....
I need a key for my 240... will go check to see if they can do it again.... and let you know... |

I paid $4 for a copy at a local locksmith, they had a blank that fit. It works better than the old worn key.

If memory serves, 126 and later keys are different than 123 and earlier keys, and need to be done by M-B.
BTW, those keys that some of you have found at a locksmith that work, do they work as a master key, or as a valet key? If they work as a master key, does anyone know where the blanks might be acquired (operative word: "blank"; I cut my own keys)? Every place I've been to that cuts keys doesn't have any blanks for M-B's. I've mentioned this before, but I'll say it again; maybe it'll help someone if they can't find any 123 blanks around. I've found that a key blank for some Hondas can be modified to work in a 123 lock cylinder. The only thing is, it will work as a valet key; you won't be able to open the trunk, passenger's door, or glove box with it. They work the driver's door and key switch just fine, though. ![]() You need to take your 123 key and hold it next to the key blank to see how far the rear shoulder needs to be cut back. You then need to cut the rear shoulder on both sides to match that; go too far and the key may go in too much; don't go far enough and the key won't go all the way in. Once that's done, it's just like cutting any other key. ![]() |

Hey Warden,
My key works as a master. I would be happy to go to the locksmith and send you some blanks if it is a W123 you are dealing with.

All you folks talking about locksmiths cutting keys or doing them yourself should be aware that the original keys are steel. Do not use a brass replacement key, because it will wear down and the resulting particles will clog up the tumbler.
