Replaced my axle

Went into the garage yesterday and replaced my right axle. This was one of the easiest jobs I have tackled so far. I only had to make one "extra" trip to AutoZone to pick up a pair of snap ring pliers. Had I paid a little closer attention to my Haynes manual as I was reading up on this job, I would have realized that I didn't have these pliers.

I'd like to thank everyone who had done this job in the past and posted good info for the rest of us to read. I can't believe I actually paid someone to do this for me on my old '80 300D...what a waste of money!

Mike

Sub,

I made a tool to remove those snap rings. Its a "T" handle bar about 15mm long with a protrusion on the end to fit in the snap ring hole. It works better than pliers because it doesn't slip off.

I attempted to quickly do the same thing so I wouldn't have to run to the store to purchase the appropriate tool. I didn' t have anything that wouldn't bend once I started pulling on it. I thought the best thing would be an ice pick with end bent into a "u". The snap ring pliers really weren't all that helpful...the ring's head was a little too small for both tips of the pliers to fit into. I basically put one tip into the ring and pulled that baby out.

Sub,

I didn't bend anything, I took a piece of 1/4" dia steel and filed or ground away the business end except for the "hook that goes into the snap ring hole.

Then I brazed a short piece of same stock on the other end to make a "T"

Then I brazed a short piece of same stock on the other end to make a "T" for easy pulling. I used to be a tool/model maker and I learned to make temp tooling.

The tool is still in my tool box and I will be using it again soon when I R&R my axle so I can replace the rear wheel bearings.
