1984 190d 2.5?

I am going to look at a 1984 5 speed 190D and the Owner says the car is a 2.5. I didn't think the 2.5 190D was available in the U.S. until 1986.

Is this a Euro car and what should I watch out for?

If its an 85 it should be a 2.2 - I guess its possible somebody swapped in a 2.5 engine.

It's also possible the owner is wrong and its really an 86.

When you take a look at the car, it's easy to tell.

Aside from checking for the 2.2 or 2.5 emblem on the trunk lid , the 2.2 is a 4-cylinder and the 2.5 is a 5-cylinder. So, just look at the engine and count the cylinders (by looking at the # of pipes on the exhaust manifold or intake, for example).

Main production of the 2.5 didn't start until June 1985, so I don't think there is such a thing as a Euro 1984 190D-2.5.

Both of you were right. The owner was wrong. The car was an 2.2. Seemed like a nice car. With a 5 speed how does this car cruise down the highway and what is the top speed?

It's adequate on the highway - you can cruise all day at 65 - 75mph. It will go 85 no problem, but I don't think you'd get much more than 90 or 95mph out of it. The specifications list the top speed as 160km/h (100mph), but that must be downhill.

With cruise control on, it can hold it's speed up moderate hills quite easily. You will have to plan your passing manuevers though - there's no neck-snapping acceleration if you floor it at 65mph. The transmission gearing is reasonable; if I remember correctly, in 5th at 60-65mph, you're just under 3000rpm. It's a fairly quiet car on the highway.

Highway mileage is 38-40mpg at 65mph. I've heard of people getting over 40mpg if they go 50-55mph (but I can't go that slow)
