I think that if I were to ever buy a VW diesel I would make those same modifications to be sure that it would be reliable. The thing is I've got the MB bug bad enough that I wouldn't even think about a VW diesel at this point. As soon as I make some room in my "stable" I'm going to start looking for another MB diesel.

Oh I completly understand, the VW's are a totaly different animal, they just happen to be mostly German and diesel, that's all. I'm not comparing the two believe me, apples to oranges. They both have a place in my heart and life. If you ever get the urge for a go-kart like driving little runner with great MPG check em out. You can do a heck of a lot with them, tons of aftermarket suspension and brakes, all sorts of goodies. I've had excellent service from all of mine, as has my father. He finally gave up the MB's because he was tired of working on them. Sold him my nice 82 TD pickup, known as a Caddy to the rest of the civilized world.

I wonder how many people getting under 30 mpg (from a 240d) are carrying "stuff" in their car? I've really noticed that the D is quite peppy with one person, not so much with two. It's also nice not to have things going bump in the trunk.

All part of the price we pay for driving a "luxury" car, I guess.

The only extra's I ever carry in the car is a set of battery cables and a Thomas guide.

On mine, the mpg went down from 28+ to 25-26 when I started running AC. Tinkering with ALDA got the power back up and probable contributed to the lower mpg.

Well, I just had the '85 190-2.3 on a little road trip and I'm not crazy about the mileage (around 25 mpg) but it sure is one hell of a road car. In 5th gear at 65 mph all you hear is this swishing noise from the tires. I love the 240 but it does sound like a truck and passing takes nerves of steel. Wouldn't blame anyone who gave up a little gas mileage to get that autobahn performance.

That's why the turbo 300D was invented.
It still sounds like a truck though.

I actually carry several hundred pouds of assorted stuff in my car usually I imagine, and still get upper 20's. I've noticed that on the lower part of a 1/4 tank of fuel, it feels a lot more spirted. These car's would be fun with a gutted interior on a track I bet.

Don't forget about using a straight pipe on the exhaust system.

The fact that a 240D can be had cheaper is just sad.
But true. Good VW diesels, epecialy TD's, are not cheap on the whole.
I have the best of both worlds.

The Jetta gets 51 MPG at 70 MPH and out handles most US and Asian cars and has seen 127 on the GPS.

The 240D is better for comfort, and is fun to drive for all the oppsite reasons of the Jetta. I checked on tank of 50-50 driving and the average was 28 mpg and I have seen 78 mph once on a test run.

It is sad though about how cheap one of these 240D's be had for the shape it's in and the durability it has over most cars.

PS: a friend has a '01 Golf he asking $9000 for if anyone is interested. It in great shape and only has 232,000 miles on the odo. Car is in as nice as shape as my wife's '02 Jetta that only has 33,000 miles on the odo.

Oddly enough, my VW's are still way more comfy. The MB rides better technicaly, but the seat, replaced spring, adding padding, etc, etc, it's still a leather park bench. I just can't bring myself to stick some mismatched one in there. The VW's have always fit my 6' frame like a glove. Go figure. Maybe a 126 will be better when I finally get one.

I agree, the VW's are more comfortable but me at 6'-3 it was a bit more like a tight glove. I always felt a bit leary riding in my dad's '80 VW "caddy" all those years ago, there just wasn't enough metal around me to make me feel safe.

The answer for me is the W210 E300TD. Unbelievable power, quiet and 27mpg in Texas with A/C on all the time. There is nothing better (until the 05 CDI's)

Oh I have no illusions of safety in an older VW. But what is safe anymore really with monsters roaming the streets. ~shrug~

A little trick on the interior room is to swap in Scirocco seats, they are lower, and have great side bolsters and such.
