ABS Rebuild Question--1987 300D
I'm 44 now. I've built engines and literally forgot one year later how to reset the timing.
I've worked ABS before. I just want to make sure I am doing it right. I am Rebuilding the Calipers, Front. I pumped the Pedal 40 times to relieve accumulator pressure and switched the ignition to off. I thank thats all you have to do. However I do remember last time Using a 2 by 4 to keep the Brake Pedal depressed during the Length of the period in which I removed the calipers, reinstalled them and bled them. Did I do it right? I was and didnt have time to ask... http://mywebpages.comcast.net/snow7ice/BENZ.html |

Huh?
You used a 2X4 to keep the brake pedal depressed while you were changing the calipers? Why? Your post would seem to imply that there is some sort of residual pressure in an ABS system when the brake pedal is released - I don't think this is true since any residual pressure would push the pistons out and activate the brakes. This would quickly casue overheating. What is the source of the imformation regarding pumping the brakes 40 times and using a 2X4 to keep the pedal depressed? |

Uhh, I didnt say i was right....
I did it this way on my Volvo 940 Turbo and everything came out fine...I do think pumping it 40 times and then switching the ignition off is neccesary in order to relieve accumulator presssure...
The link that specifies this is: http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/BrakesABS1.html I may be wrong, but I hope I am right and didnt do anything wrong. Mostly i was hoping for feedback from anybody who has rebuilt the 300D 87 Brakes, you never know each car has its own unique service points.. I did he struts this weekend and it was very scary trying to get the springs back on, something didnt align right and one popped out curled up like a C when the spring compressors shifted, I had no choice but to cover the spring with 1 inch plywood and undo the spring compressors, I know hat happens when they burst... |
