Mercedes Wheel Bearing Longevity?

I have my 1987 Mercedes 300D Front End completely broken down now. I have spent quite a bit on new Eccentric Bolts, Ball Joints and Struts and knuckles.

At 220K do any of you feel that the Wheel Bearings require
replacement? I dont think they ever came up for replacement in my 300D W123's until the 300K mark..

Do any of you concur? I want to rebuild the front end well, but i dont want to Gold Plate it! Thanks

They only cost a couple of bucks; you might as well do them while you are in there. Though, it's pretty easy to do later if you choose not to. I did the '85 300D at 215k miles.
cheers,
K

I just did mine today. It's pretty easy, just remember not to put too much grease in between the inner and outer bearings. I measured out 60 grams, filled the endcap with the correct amount, packed the bearings, then used the remainder between the bearings and on the spindle. The grease that goes between the inner and outer bearings should form a sort of dam up against each bearing's outer race. Good luck...

My 240D still has the original wheel bearings front and rear after 533,000 miles. I think I packed the front ones once along the way.

Just inspect the bearings and races, repack and put them back together.

Good luck,

Inspect them. If they appear anything less than perfect, replace them. Otherwise reuse them. Anything less than perfect would include any nicks, dings, or dents, or discoloration on the raceways.

When repacking, do nothing less than a perfect job and replace the seals. Adjust axial play to spec. Poor adjustment of axial play will reduce bearing life significantly.

I have over 500,00 miles of MB ownership experience and I've never replaced a wheel bearing.

Thanks Tim

Mr Freeh,
Thats what I thought. I only replaced them once, and thats when I must have had a damaged spindle from the car hitting a curb at 30 mph to avoid a pedestrian. What a Tank of car, no damage at all, but I didnt realize the spindle was bent until had to change the bearing on it 2x....

Rephrased as "If u can fix it, it will Break!!"

The lady down the street is about 60, knows nothing about cars. I offer to help her gratis if she runs into trouble; she has a 85 Corolla aith 130 K miles. last year she logged 20K and never had one problem!

Me, I am under my car everyday!

Carrameow,

Sounds like the lady agrees with me.

Maybe you are fixing something that isn't broken every day??
