w115 axle shaft questions

I will probably have to replace the drivers side axle shaft in my '75 240D project car. It feels quite sloppy, and I am hearing clunking noises from the rear end. So it would be a good place to start I think.

The two options I have are an 80.00 rebuilt axle from carquest, or a 27.00 used one from a junkyard. The only problem I see with the used one is removal. The yard does not allow jacks inside for people to use, for saftey reasons. It looks like my option there would be to unbolt the differential and let it fall to the ground. I might be able to find something to stick underneath it to catch it when I remove the last bolt. Has anyone done something like this? The car itself is solidly suspended off the ground. The hub side to the axle is already loose. The axle appears to be in reasonalby good shape. Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Blake
