Smile just bought my first diesel

just got an 84 300TD today. It's been sitting for a while so I'll be checking all the fluids before trying to start it. Also plan to squirt a little oil of AFT in the GP holes, and check/drain the fuel filters.

The injection pump seems to be siezed up. I can't get the throttle linkage to move. It flexes a little when you step on the pedal or try it by hand. It feels like the linkage is frozen down below by the fuel pump.

I saw the ATF trick posted a couple of times so I will try that...

Is it common for the linkage to get gummed up and tight from sitting. Have the pumps ever been known to freeze up?

Yes I did the search functions but maybe I didn't use the right buzz words? What is the proper term, fuel pump, injection pump, injector pump, ?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to playing with the old beast. I have plans for a WVO cruiser!

Thanks for any insight...

Welcome Odie!

Never heard of a pump seizing up. Spray the linkage down with some PB Blaster and be careful not to damage it.

linkage is fine. I found one of the little plastic rollers at the top was flat. If I hold that part of the linkage it works fine. Looks to be an easy fix.

I'll put some oil/atf in the cylinders, try the priming pump, check the oil level and jump start it. Hopefully it will sputter or fire. If so it looks to be a winner and I'll change all the fluids and filters before fully starting it and driving it.

Odie,

If the engine turns, either by using the starter or manually, forget the ATF in the cylinders, it will do no good.

If the fuel filters pass enough fuel to run the engine, they don't have to be "drained" or replaced.

Correct term is injection pump (IP).

motor turns over. I put some jumpers on it to check some of the electrical stuff...windows, lights, FUEL GUAGE...out of curiosity I bumped the starter...it turns so the engine isn't frozen.

That was my biggest fear. The car had been abandoned for over a year. The Navy Base had is in storage for a while before selling it. Supposedly they tried to start it before so I'm guessing the motor has been spun from time to time so it kept some oil fresh in the cylinders and such.

The battery is totally dead so all I can do it bump it a little with the jumpers. I'm going to bring a good battery tomorrow and try to start it up.
