Turn signals suddenly don't work, but hazard flashers do

Any easy to check ideas? It looks like you need to pull the wheel to get off the cover over the steering column to get at the turn stalk itself, are there some relays or loose connections to trouble shoot before I get serious about pulling things apart?

No its way easier. All you have to do is jiggle your hazard flasher switch. You may only need to pull it out and clean it. I sometimes have my signals go out and all I do I jiggle the hazard switch while the turn switch is on to get them to work again.

Actually, there is a relay in front of the shifter under the wood console that likely needs to be replaced. I fought this same problem off and on for months in my wife's 300TD and on the advise of my son I replaced the relay...after I had already replaced the emergency flasher switch (which didn't fix the problem). No more problems with hers after the relay was replaced. Now I'm having the same problem in the SL.

I tried doing a bunch off jiggling, moving the stalk up and down at the same time as turning the flashers on and off, didn't help.

For Sublettd, is it a seperate relay from the one I hear clicking when the flashers are on? That one seems to be under the steering column in the dash (I can reach under and feel it clicking), not in front of the shifter.

On the 126 300SD the flasher relay is directly behind the instrument cluster, almost dead center. Electrical Service Manual, page 214, figure 3.

A copy of a post of mine from way back - hope it helps :-

Your problem is very likely your emergency flasher switch. This switch hates "Coke" or any fluid which may have gotten inside to short out the contacts.

The flasher unit is located in the centre console near the shift lever under the ash-tray.

To isolate the problem:

1) Remove the console top cover and unplug the 8-pin plug from the emerg. switch.

2) Take a loop of wire and short out contacts 49 and 30 (next to each other) on the plug. Your indicators should now work normally. If not, then the problem lies either with the flasher unit (expensive) or the ind. switch on the column.

3)The emerg. switch can be stripped right down and then cleaned thoroughly. Spring the plastic casing and the assembly can be slid out. Be most careful to make a sketch and note how to re-assemble the sliding contacts, springs etc or you will be left with a jig-saw puzzle.

Well thanks Beagle, that's the kind of hard info I was looking for. Jumpered the 49/30 connection, and the turn signals worked fine. Pulled the switch for the hazard flashers apart, and I think to resistor in there has failed, cleaned and reassembled it a few times, couldn't get it to work, then metered the resistor and it's showing full current flow. Took out the piece that connects to that, so with the hazard switch in the on position it lets the turn signals work, as the remaining contact connects the 49/30 terminals in the switch. Guess I'm looking for a new switch now, or maybe soldering in a new resistor. Thanks again for the fast responses...
