300SD W126 water pump leak?

Hi,I have a question on my new(for me) 82' 300SD,w126.
I recently purchased this car(very cheap),it runs great,just,I
think the water pump gave up.I found antifreeze under the car
only after I shut the engine for a couple of hours(over night),
dripping down from under the water pump,it does not leak
when engine is running?,no bearing noise from water pump,
normal operating temp.,just a half quart of antireeze every
morning under the car, coming from behind the cooling fan right
where the water pump is bolted in the block with 6-8 bolts. Is it
possible to be something else?,all the water hoses are new.

It is probably leaking from the w/pump weep hole, most common leak on the pumps. Only fix is to replace the pump. I think that is usually the reason to replace a waterpump, a leak there.
Thanks
David

Sounds exactly like how my water pump went. Sort of all of a sudden it was leaking out of the weep hole. It wasn't too hard to change out the pump myself and was also, fortunately, comparatively cheap. If you're a dyi'r just order one on line, but also change out your belts at the same time since you have to remove them anyway.

Isn't the waterpump belt the closest to the engine? If it is, then definitely get all new belts since the other ones will be off too. Actually, the P/S pump may be the furthest back. let me know on yours.
Thanks
David

Which water pump to get long or short?

I wanted to have a spare water pump on hand and it seems there are two water pumps a long and a short. One is listed as 3 1/2 inches with 5/8" hub. is this the long or the short? Can anyone list the dimensions for both of them?

greybeardmike,
We won't be able to help much unless you give us a model and year.

(Hint: to make it easier in the future, go to "UserCP" and edit your signature to include year and model.)

Sorry about that, it is a 1982 300SD, 917.951 engine. I see water pumps with 3 1/2" hub height and 5/8" hub thickness. Other places want to know if it is short or long. Can't measure what I have right now, I'm at work. Anyone know the actual dimensions for the short and long?

Are you sure about the engine #. IIRC that car should have the 617.952 engine.

Auto Zone about $45, life time warranty. They didn't ask me about a long or short and the one I got fit.

The best bet is click on "Buy Parts" at the top of the page. It is listed there for about $50, from someone that knows your car, supports this forum (where you find answers) and I would lay odds, noting where you live, that Phil could have the part sitting on your porch the next day.

BTW, the website shows 4-hole long for your car.

Former indie mechanics don't care much for chain parts, (Advance Auto Zone) I'd go with one from here or elsewhere that deals with MB parts.
