I recently got my 609 certification so that I can deal with r12. I picked up some dupont r12 and the cans have an unfamiliar top (to me) that needs some sort of special tap unlike the threaded r134 can tops.
The only option I have seen to tap the r12 can is a "Mastercool" side mount tap valve but to me this approach just doesn't seem safe or foolproof. Does anyone have any experience with these or are there correct taps for these types of cans on the market? Any advice much appreciated!!

Originally the can taps for R12 and 22 cans had a clip that locked over the upper lip and a neoprene sealed piece that threaded tight onto the top of the can, then a needle was threaded in to pierce the can top.
I have used the hand grip clamp type tap and it works fine. You just have to pay attention and see that you LOCK the grip as you pierce the can. I still have an old fashioned can tapper and one of the hand grips. The last time I used cans, I used the hand grip. Good luck, |

One of our forum guys posted his own website with his ac repair ... and suggested the new side tapper cans .... so I got one for R12 and one for 134a..... they are ' side ' tappers... so you can also use it for tapping WD 40 cans to access it in liquid form...which is one of the measures he used to start his flushing routine.... because they go around the can they may be safer than the little clip type on top....
Instead of crossing your fingers... keep them covered with gloves... and your eyes with goggles....these two items are at the first of every ac book I have ever seen..... |

Leathermang,
Godd advice on the gloves and eyegoggles. Are there any tricks to a clean puncture and seal with the side tapping devices?

No tricks. Just make sure you are set up for the right size can before puncture. This is probably not an issue since it will probably not fit the wrong can. There is a spacer that can be used for skinny cans.
Good luck, |

LOL... can't say, have not used mine yet....
But remember that when you tap the bottom you are going to have liquid coming out unless you turn it upside down... Just the opposite from the top tap... This is obvious stuff.... but felt I needed to remind.... because if you put liquid into the compressor you will freeze the reed valve... don't ask me how I know that.... Most of us will be dealing with the vapor inputting of refergerant on the suction side... If you are going attempt the liquid input be sure you understand the principles well before you fasten up your equipment.... |
