Actually, the general rule for car towing capacity is 1/2 the car's weight - usually 1500 lbs.

I have a 240d and while I honestly "think" the the suspension and brakes would handle a 2200 pound trailer at highway speeds just fine...I don't think it would ever reach anything even close to highway speeds tho...

Yes diesels love to pull...but these are some of the smallest engines ever put in an auto mobile...I know HP and torque are apples and oranges but use your imagination a little...my 240d? 67 HP...97 ft pounds torque...Dodges new diesel pick-up? 600 ft pounds of torque No idea on the horses....I'll bet the farm its way more than 67 tho...

Alright, that's all I can take I guess I was "alittle " over-zealous in thinking the ol' crate could do it.....but....I am going to try it along some back roads just because I'm stubborn.
The point about the driveline being overtaxed is very enlightening, and I will be cautious. The one neat thing is that this old car is manual everything (which is why I wanted it), but it does have the self-levelling hydraulic rear suspension.

So, I'll let you know how it goes soon

Actually, I'd be truly surprised if anything on your car, aft of the clutch disk will suffer. MBZ manual transmissions, driveshafts, differentials and half-shafts are notoriously overengineered.Keep the revs up...no lugging!! These certainly aren't long stroke Cummins' engines.

And, let me know were you're going to be taking this Cirque du Soleil...I may want to watch.

Did you ever feel a differential on a big towing rig after even a moderate tow they get hot! sure ZF make good units but when designing the unit in a 220D I don't think they had in mind towing a 2200 pound box. Not to mention the clucth ,all serious towing rigs used for towing travel trailers etc. use large gasoline V8's or diesel engines with heavy duty automatic transissions with large coolers.I've done a lot of towing and the surest surest way I can think of to ruin a clucth is to pull a trailer that is too heavy for you vehicle. And we are talking about a 30+ year old car.........

Maybe not. However, I'll bet that diff and tranny is practically the same on the big gassers as it is on the milque toast 220D.
