Head Gaskets

Is there a known problem with head gasket failures on the 1990 - 1993 2.5 Turbo Diesel engines? If so what are the issues and fixes?

My friend's '91 300D blew its head gasket, but it fooled him.

It acted like the first piston was cracked and/or the head was cracked.

In reality the head gasket was blown on the inside, between the chain and the first cylinder.

His car has about 197,000 miles on it.

It runs great now....
