If you don't move the engine or turn the pump gear and mark the pump from how it came off, its easy to get it back to the same position it came off at. Assuming the timing was correct in the first place.

Don't you have to remove the vacuum pump to get the IP off?

I never have. Its a total of 4 mounting bolts, the 5 lines, and 3 or 4 fuel/oil lines.

With the OM60x engines you do.... with the 617 you don't.

wow i didn't know it was that easy to take the pump off, what does it align into to turn it with the engine?

A gear on the pump shaft aligns with a gear on the motor via a splined collar.
