The bolt would be a nice simple sloution though I can't figure out where I'd put it unless I did some welding on it. The mount has bolts from the top and bottom so I couldn't put it through the center.

I'm kind of liking the strap idea. It's similar to the old trick of the drag racers using a length of chain. The strap is nice because it's not solid and won't transmit vibration to the chassis when tight. Hmmmmm...

Zeroing in on the exact mounting location:

A few reference marks:

Some clearance issues:

Next step will be to complete the welding jig, create the CAD/CAM file for the manifold flange and send it to the shop for water jet or laser cutting.

As for the torque limiting strap, it'll be a simple matter of using the bolt on the top of the mount to pass through the eyes in the end of the strap and then I can wrap the strap around the cross member.

Or since you are going to the trouble of having a custom manifold made, you could make some custom mount bushings.

I still don't see why you are having problems with the mounts. The Finns are putting down well over 400hp without problems.

I reckon' that's true. I'm just brainstorming - thinking of all the potential problem areas. For fun, I might put my defective one on the bandsaw and cut it in half to see what's inside.

speaking of torque-limiting.. is your turbo gonna crunch when the engine mounts flex? It looks awefully tight in there

Solid mounts ftw.

Where it's mounted, the torque lever arm is moving more downward than to the side. I did account for a little movement to the side and I'm also tweaking the final mounting position more to the driver's side to allow a tad more clearance.

There's also a relief in the heat shielding that you can't see in the picture that gives it a little more clearance.

Holy cow, the vibration was bad enough when I had a collapsed mount on the passengers side. I can't imagine what it would be like with solid mounts!

Nothing fun going now... I've been spending hours on the computer getting the design done for the laser/water jet cutter to do the manifold backing plate. The car is still a mess, everything disconnected because I'm using the manifold gasket as a template and taking my measurements from it.

I can post all my silly sketches and calculations but I don't want everyone seeing how many times I change my mind and scratch through my plans!

I also have the preliminary design complete for the routing of the exhaust tubing.

Yeah, I've gotten used to it... If I zoom WAY in, it's not too bad. Lukily, most all the shapes are fairly symmetrical and I create one side, copy and mirror it to make the whole piece.

Here's a couple updates that I just finished. I took everything back apart today and spent a couple more hours re-positioning the turbo into a final, more optimal position.

This is the design for the manifold flange:

If the fabricators have trouble with the oval ports, a version with a round port will work:

Here's a concept drawing for the shape of the manifold. This free-form stuff is where the akwardness of the track pad really shows.
