Tach Numbers

Drove on the highway today... went as fast as 85

5th gear. 2000 rpm 65mph(per gps), 2200 rpm 75mph
4th gear. 2350-2400 rpm 65mph, 2800 rpm 75mph.

Nothing strange on the highway. Had the clutch slipping in 3rd at 3500.. I hope it lasts till winter.

All is well so far. Shifter is still hard to navigate. I may switch it out for the other one. Shift knob is ridiculously too long.. rather like driving an old ford pickup:rolleyes:

Some post install pics and video soon.

87 5 spd swap

Ashedd I'm ready to do the swap in my 300TD except for two items driveshaft and crossmember. How much did you spend on the driveshaft? or any body on this forum knows were to get one done? and did buy or fabricate your crossmember?

ashedd 07-04-2010 02:55 AM

The mercedes driveshaft is a delicate thing. It is hard to find someone to deal with it... The mercedes driveshaft is "crimped" together... there is only ONE place in the US who can crimp them and they are in cali. The only problem is "they" refuse to lengthen or shorthem them.... in comes my "guy"... those "cali" peeps send their driveshafts to my guy for length adjustments. I paid 350 for a custom shaft with TWO different size ends. 34.5 inches after it was said and done.

The crossmember is odd. The w201 crossmember looks great but it will not match up with ANY of the holes on the w124 underside. The best you can do is "bolt" it up the best you can and use a peice of sheet iron stock(what I did) to connect the rear tranny support with the crossmember.... about 2.5 inches difference.

Hope that gives an idea.... TOTALLY worth it. Such a great car with a stick

Tanks for the information

Some pic's

I have a few pics here of the custom driveshaft.

It's been WAAAAAY too hot to play "car" this week. I have a TD that has leaked all the freon out, a flat tire on the TD, SD needs new rubber muffler hangers AND the shifter in the '87 has been getting really loose... it won't go in to reverse now  so I need to swap the shifter out with the other one that I didn't take apart and put new bushings in:o
All that plus regular chicken maintence and various flowers and vegtables that I have to tend to.

new forward shaft and old aft shaft. Carrier bearing was also replaced.

More Pics

I took these pics today after my driveline torque check. Fixed the shifter... couple of bolts worked loose. Removed, cleaned and locktite the bolts. All works fine now.

Maybe you will be lucky, with the 123 the 240d auto member is used with the 300d + 4 spd.

ashedd 07-11-2010 12:29 PM

well i have 3 crossmembers here. The original auto one and two w201 manual ones. Both the manual ones are slightly different and out of the three none really work. I would not be hard to make one if I had to. It works fine the way it is but doesn't look all that great... but then again who's looking. Guess I could get some rough measurements and try to find one at the junk yard but that does not sound like any fun to me.

Did the factory W201 shifter rods work with the 5-speed shifter and factory transmission placement? Were there any modifications required to the shifter rods/linkage?

SteveM.

No it all fits/works fine

EDIT:

Sorry that was a little vague..
no mods to the linkage... just some adjustments. Shifter is a direct drop in as well as pedals. The tunnel is tight and the linkage makes some contact with the insulation but it seems to be ok. Once it's all buttoned up with heat shields and stuff it is very clear there is not much wiggle room for anything.
