Ha, yeah, i picked the 2.0l MAF insert because it fit and it was cheap! $40... :)

I'd be interested to know how much performance you loose with it (although I guess you're going from a dead one so it will probably be a huge improvement over what you had!)

I really wish that my datalogging software had worked prior to the MAF going dead so I could do some before and after comparisons.
I'm pretty sure it won't really suffer since the diesel doesn't use the MAF info as critically as a gas engine but we'll see.... |
On the TDI the computer relies heavily on the MAF for smoke control. If it doesn't see air it will pull fuel. When the MAF on my TDI got really bad it wouldn't maintain 65 in 5th... it had so little power. I'd imagine the 606 is similar.

Right now, the ECU reports around 0.04 lb/min. from the MAF. The car has plenty of power off the line but it seems to have forgotten how to down shift on it's own at speed.
If I manually down shift, it accelerates the same as it always has. It seems like the fueling is more RPM related when there's no MAF signal. |

Turns out the job is so easy that it doesn't even need a picture!
I used a small pair of vice-grips to grab and loosen the "star" security screws holding the sensor core in place. Swapped in the new part and changed out the screws for a couple of #12 x 3/4" stainless sheet metal screws. Cleared the codes, went for a drive and everything is working perfectly! So, for $47 delivered, the car is back up and running! Here's the ebay listing for the part I ended up buying: |

this is good news, I used the VW maf as well before it died ( oiled filter and MAF are a bad combination), great maf. The one I used was a bosch, numbers for the maf sensor: F00C2G2032 for the whole assembly: 0280218002 or 06A906461A I never heard of the brand you ordered, is that quality? Anymore news on the MAF elimination as I am now using a F00C2g2029 but its on its way out, rough starting and iddling once in awhile :( Cheers. Olivier |
Just digging this thread back up.
I've been "forced" to deal with MAF problems again. I'm pretty sure it's in the connector but I thought I'd try some elimination experiments while I was working on it. I have a variable resistor between the last 2 wires on the MAF and I have set a static MAF indication of 20#. It's very stable and throws no codes when the engine is hot. We'll see how things go in the morning when it's cold again. Last time, the ECU sensed a failure and would not allow the engine to rev past idle. The throttle pedal was literally useless. |
