M1 TD&T
I have a drip though, need to address that so that it leaves the garage clean. Then find a used encapsulation panel.

Just finished Step 1 of the KBS 3-Step Tank Cleaning and Sealer System. Letting it dry now. Next up... RUST BLASTTTTTTTT!

:nuke:

An error on my part in writing that text. The engine warms to 80 or just a tad above on the gauge, actual temp is unknown. It never remains below 80C at any time when warm. During the summer however, it warms up closer to about 82/83C for obvious reasons. It is at that point when the engine is at about 82/83C where the engine vibration shows itself fully. It's only at idle when the vibration is bad.

Sorry...not trying to hijack your thread, but I sense that your problem might be similar so I think finding out what this is would help both of us.

Hijack away, this thread has gone 11 pages and I haven't accomplished much due to time and budget constraints.

My tank is STILL drying so I can't seal just yet.

And I gave my 6 spare injectors to my friend to pop test for me.

While the last thing I need to do right now is worry about this, I figured I'd ask. Do the '603s have much of a turbo whistle with the stock airbox? My friends '602 you can hear a little bit of turbo whistle and I know the airboxes are way different. On my frieds TDIs the whistle is very apparent, and I watched a video a 603 swapped R109 and his car had a very loud turbo. If I delete the MAF (what does that entail) and put on a cone does that make the turbo whistle? I know I won't really see any performance gain, I'm just a closet ricer haha.

From the stock perspective I can hear the turbo from the cockpit when I accelerate away from a stop, but it isn't all that loud. Problem is that for some reason my turbo goes offline fairly quickly due to an unknown vacuum problem that I haven't resolved.

Comparatively you have to remember that a W140 is a 5000lb car so takes a lot of umph to move it off the line.

I know that's not much to go on but it's something.

I never heard the turbo in my (first) '87 300D until I had owned it for about two years. I had a rattle or jingle in the engine compartment, was running the engine in the garage with the hood open, brake on, going on/off the loud pedal, noticed I could hear it spool down (quite clearly) in the garage.

Normally, no.

gsxr 06-29-2010 09:48 AM

On my 87 300D's, the KKK turbos are nearly silent, but I can sometimes hear the Garrett... usually on spool-down. The 93 300D made a bit more noise but it was still pretty quiet. For any of them, if the radio was on or fan was not on low speed, you wouldn't hear anything.

Sounds good (get it?)

Does putting a cone filter on the intake make the turbo louder? Like I said, I'm a closet ricer, you can pick up a decent washable filter for like $20 anymore so it won't break me if I decide it is obnoxious.

babymog 06-29-2010 12:29 PM

Should be louder, and turbos love dust.

DieselPaul 06-29-2010 12:32 PM

You think cone filters don't do a good enough job?

babymog 06-29-2010 12:38 PM

There is a lot of debate over the K&N and other washable filters. Personally, I'd go with a good quality paper. It's going to be tough to find a cone filter with the amount of filter area of the OE.

I've got a brand new MANN in the stock setup right now. I like how big it is and how much area it has. WAY bigger than the 2.5 cars.

babymog 06-29-2010 06:48 PM

Yeah, but the 2.5s and the 606s got the coooool vented fender.
