Today I removed the full load rack off of a 1985 MB 300SD Turbo Diesel, I did everything by the book so I could get full power but now I have a runaway.
Luckily I had a friend stand by the turbo with a small piece of wood to cut the air to the engine I can't find out what I did wrong. I even had pictures of what to take out. It looks the same but it didn't work soooo I need help ASAP I have a baby on the way and to make matters worse it's my girls car AND SHE IS PISSED!!!! My ass is on the line please HELP!!! Pictures please if you can I'm in a time crunch. ![]() |

Put it all back how it was before you had the problem.
It sounds like you have removed a return spring & it IP just stayed on full fuel after the motor started. Best not mess with her car!! She doesnt need the extra to deal with at the moment. Best you mess up your own car.

The rack limiter will not cause a run away by just removing it, you must have done something else while you where in there inadvertantly. Check for springs inside that may have come undone. Did you adjust anything else? Also check your external throttle linkages, there should be a spring just to the rear of the IP . This spring is vertical and pulls the throttle back to idle. It is slightly in the way for removeing the cover, so maybe you will be lucky and this is the spring that is off.

I have fixed this problem, (run away), for someone that did the same thing. There is no reason to remove the rack limiter. You can make chunks of coal fall out the tail pipe without even maxing out the limiter if the correct adjustments are made.
Here is the bad part. There is no way I can describe what you need to look for, and how to get it where it needs to be. What happened on the one that was towed to me, was in the process of fishing around in the governor to remove the limiter, the ALDA linkage disengaged and jammed the rack. With out seeing the parts you took out, I have no idea if you fished them all out. Seriously, if you do not know what you are doing, stop messing around in there as all you are doing is making things more complicated for the pump teck. All you need is to think you have it fixed and have the throttle stick on the way to the hospital. Go rent a car so you can get her to the hospital, and tow the car to the shop. EDIT: One thought I didn't mention. You may get lucky if you remove the vacuum shut off actuator and move the throttle lever from max to min a few times. It is possible to improperly install the shut off actuator and have it hold the rack forward. I'd start the engine with out the shut off and use the Stop lever on the valve cover. If it idles properly try installing the shut off again. Last edited by OM616; 05-03-2011 at 11:35 PM. |

This is the most likely culprit.
