I think someone beat you to it
I was actually trying to find the pic of the w123 300td grafted onto a Nissan 4x4 chassis that a guy I knew from the old mbz.org list had. He used it as a daily driver in northern california. The guy who built it had also done at least one Volvo 245.
But I found this: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/open-discussion/159298-redneck-mercedes.html And THIS: http://www.flickr.com/photos/edheil/3229571125/ (Which I must admit I like) Ah, finally found it, on the blog of the guy who built it.... http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://daddytypes.com/archive/4x4_mb_300td.jpg&imgrefurl=http://daddytypes.com/2007/03/09/homebrewed_family_4x4_nirvana_mercedes_300td_volvo_245.php&usg=__OsPFLWsX-DJKFYopD9PL03Jk4ig=&h=189&w=341&sz=32&hl=en&start=1&zoom=1&tbnid=7vKIDCU7FiZU4M:&tbnh=67&tbnw=120&ei =2zGLUJODDeng0gGO7YC4Bg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmercedes%2B300td%2B4%2Bx%2B4%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26tbm%3Disch&um=1 &itbs=1 |
so ...
i the rebuilding of the engine is going slow ... and i decided it wasnt big enough ... so i went out and bought a 84 300D engine .. 80K miles they claimed .. for 450$ going to use it http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110187.jpg http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae139/wildhorsemfg/benz%20diesel%20convserion/P1110187.jpg |
I have NEVER seen an oil pan like that, what car did it come out of?

yea i can tell i want a guard so you dont bang it on a curb , :( |
Looks like a Euro NA OM617, and that pan probably isn't optimal given that it appears to be all aluminum. Typically these engines use a steel bottom pan that would be better for off-roading. Personally, I would hold out for a turbo 617 engine
|
yeah, totally an N/A engine. Note the lack of an ALDA.
|
well ... idk , its what i have for now ... i was thinking of turboing it .. or if i find a turbo engine , it will go in a toyota . :)
here is todays work .. mating a benz auto flywheel to a mazda flywheel .. this will let me use a $75.00 clutch . and the mazda tranny .. http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110189.jpg http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110198.jpg http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110197.jpg |
Interesting solution.... Why didn't I think of that?
Red locktite on those bolts... |

well i found another thread where a guy out a 617 in a b2600 .. but he bolted the manual 240 flywheel to the mazda manual flywheel ... yes , lots and lots of locktite .. |
ok ... today i made the adapter and bolted the engine to tranny ..
http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110209.jpg http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110211.jpg http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110212.jpg and i am not proud of this last pic ... start hole is bigger than i planed on making it ..,. plasma would not cut through the ribs .. so i had to go around them ... need to get some shorter starter bolts ... http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110213.jpg |
photobucket decided i need to put the photo into folders ,,, and it changed the urls .. and i cant edit my posts ,,,
so here is the url to the photobucket album .,,, benz diesel convserion Photos by wildhorsemfg | Photobucket |
was able to fix some of the pics on this page ...
here is more progress .. and i threw the cab back on it to test the tranny and clutch .. seems to work good . not lacking any power but it doesnt weigh anything either .. next step is to pull cab . install new clutch , and start stripping the car body . http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110221.jpg http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110222.jpg http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...n/P1110219.jpg |
Well it fits! Is there still a big hole in the transmission casing near to the starter?

I plan on making a sheet metal cover for it , |
Oh I thought you might be able to tack (weld) a nut to the other side of the adapter plate you made and then you've got a similar to stock fixing situation.
