74 240d lifted and 4x4

not sure if this is the correct place to post this . but it will be a build thread of my 1974 240D , lifted on a mazda b2600 frame , with the 616 engine and the mazda 5 speed 4x4 tranny .

this was the idea that started my project http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...colorvair4.jpg

here is the car body im using http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...g/P1100759.jpg

and here is the "not yet stripped " 4x4 chassis http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/a...g/P1100961.jpg

Looks like fun - and those Mazdas seem to be more plentiful than W115s you shouldn't have any trouble with spares. Why are you sticking with the OM616? Those Mazda diesels are favoured by London Taxis - well I think it is those engines...

wildhorsemfg 10-22-2012 11:33 AM

well
A , i dont like gas engines
B , mazda engine has a bent rod .

mazda diesel are kinda scarce here . i think i have only ever seen one forsale .

Oh sorry I keep on forgetting about the USA not having many diesels - I was thinking it was a Mazda diesel - I don't think many petrol versions were sold in Europe; I reckon they are as rare as rocking horse poop here.

Go for it.

If you need some inspiration - just in case eh? - there are several pretty good threads here on making things fit. Three that come immediately to mind are dropnosky's W115 240D thread

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/283394-bought-74-240d-weekend.html

and mach4's 107 thread

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/308791-380sl-diesel-conversion-project.html

and more standard stuff for the W115 from whunter

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/321775-welcome-fleet-1976-w115-114-300d-dark-green.html

He's put in loads of part numbers which may or may not be of use

Good luck and keep us posted

TheDon 10-25-2012 09:32 PM

looks like you took your engine apart, really wanted to clean it eh?

How do you plan on getting around the engine and transmission fitting together? It does look like a ton of fun. I think I will be in Boise again in late Jan, hopefully you'll have that thing done by then (if youre close to Boise I'd totally like to check it out if I have time)

wildhorsemfg 10-25-2012 10:53 PM

well it had REALLY low compression , like 150 lbs .

its getting new liners and bearings and such .

i am not sure yet ... a adapter plate and possibly the mazda flywheel bolted to the M/B auto flywheel .

Im way north of bosie . close to spokane .

Simpler=Better 10-26-2012 09:42 AM

Shouldn't hurt to throw sodium turbo valves in there along with the usual performance rebuild stuff

You're probably better of fusing the 240 flywheel and making it work with the Mazda transmission. When I tried bolting the two together it didn't seem like the best solution.

Stretch 10-26-2012 10:55 AM

Seeing as the engine is in bits I'd be replacing the bearings on the vacuum pump (assuming you are going to use it).

wildhorsemfg 10-26-2012 11:21 AM

Im cheap . so it will not have anything Too fancy in there ...

I have a machine shop . so the flywheel wont be a problem ... AT worst i will use a M/B 4 speed and a separate transfer case .

i have a extra vac pumps , so im not too worried about accessories , and all it will do is run brakes .

also . I found a guy who has a 240D factory turbo ,,, working on buying it ,

Stretch 10-26-2012 12:26 PM

Do you mean an AMG turbo?

Once and for all the answer to the did AMG do diesels for the w123 - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

wildhorsemfg 10-26-2012 01:27 PM

perhaps . i havent seen it ,. i was told it was for a 240D and heard that once upon a time they existed . :)

sassparilla_kid 10-26-2012 03:48 PM

I would be using some sodium filled valves and turbo pistons and rods if I had the engine that far apart, just in case I decided to add a turbo it would already have beefier insides

Stretch 10-26-2012 04:20 PM

I thought the turbo valves were larger in diameter than the non turbo OM617 valves (and thus the OM616 ones) - you'd have to cut the seats bigger wouldn't you?

Zacharias 10-26-2012 08:55 PM

I think someone beat you to it

I was actually trying to find the pic of the w123 300td grafted onto a Nissan 4x4 chassis that a guy I knew from the old mbz.org list had. He used it as a daily driver in northern california. The guy who built it had also done at least one Volvo 245.

But I found this:

And THIS:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/edheil/3229571125/
(Which I must admit I like)

Ah, finally found it, on the blog of the guy who built it....
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://daddytypes.com/archive/4x4_mb_300td.jpg&imgrefurl=http://daddytypes.com/2007/03/09/homebrewed_family_4x4_nirvana_mercedes_300td_volvo_245.php&usg=__OsPFLWsX-DJKFYopD9PL03Jk4ig=&h=189&w=341&sz=32&hl=en&start=1&zoom=1&tbnid=7vKIDCU7FiZU4M:&tbnh=67&tbnw=120&ei =2zGLUJODDeng0gGO7YC4Bg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmercedes%2B300td%2B4%2Bx%2B4%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN%26tbm%3Disch&um=1 &itbs=1

wildhorsemfg 11-18-2012 08:35 PM

so ...
i the rebuilding of the engine is going slow ... and i decided it wasnt big enough ... so i went out and bought a 84 300D engine .. 80K miles they claimed .. for 450$
going to use it

I have NEVER seen an oil pan like that, what car did it come out of?

he said it was a 84 or 85 300D wagon

yea i can tell i want a guard so you dont bang it on a curb , :(

auspumpen 11-19-2012 04:50 PM

Looks like a Euro NA OM617, and that pan probably isn't optimal given that it appears to be all aluminum. Typically these engines use a steel bottom pan that would be better for off-roading. Personally, I would hold out for a turbo 617 engine

TheDon 11-19-2012 07:20 PM

yeah, totally an N/A engine. Note the lack of an ALDA.

wildhorsemfg 11-19-2012 09:10 PM

well ... idk , its what i have for now ... i was thinking of turboing it .. or if i find a turbo engine , it will go in a toyota . :)
here is todays work ..
mating a benz auto flywheel to a mazda flywheel ..
this will let me use a $75.00 clutch . and the mazda tranny ..

Interesting solution.... Why didn't I think of that?

Red locktite on those bolts...

well i found another thread where a guy out a 617 in a b2600 .. but he bolted the manual 240 flywheel to the mazda manual flywheel ...

yes , lots and lots of locktite ..

wildhorsemfg 11-22-2012 09:02 PM

ok ... today i made the adapter and bolted the engine to tranny ..

and i am not proud of this last pic ... start hole is bigger than i planed on making it ..,. plasma would not cut through the ribs .. so i had to go around them ... need to get some shorter starter bolts ...

wildhorsemfg 12-08-2012 11:08 AM

was able to fix some of the pics on this page ...

here is more progress ..

and i threw the cab back on it to test the tranny and clutch .. seems to work good . not lacking any power but it doesnt weigh anything either ..

next step is to pull cab . install new clutch , and start stripping the car body .

Well it fits! Is there still a big hole in the transmission casing near to the starter?

yea , but its kind needed to get to the started bolts ..
I plan on making a sheet metal cover for it ,

Stretch 12-10-2012 03:27 AM

Oh I thought you might be able to tack (weld) a nut to the other side of the adapter plate you made and then you've got a similar to stock fixing situation.

no . becuse the bolts for a benz starter come through and are tapped and thread into the starter ..

Ozarkdude 12-23-2012 12:55 AM

You could cut the section of tranny out of the Benz tranny that the starter bolts through, and, if you cut a big enough section and trim carefully, could weld that section to the other tranny.
