No. The WIS is what Mercedes sells to dealers to use for their techs. AFAIK, it's not for sale to the public, and if it is, the cost is many thousands of dollars. The CD-ROM sets are what you and I normally buy at the dealer (ok, the new W140 set is on DVD, not CD, but anyway...)

I just got intercoolers from an Audi 5000 and Volvo 740 at Pull & Save. I pose this question:

Would having a BIG intercooler like the volvo be worth removing the A/C system?

I'm not going to put it on my wagon, I want to put on my 240D conversion. It's A/C system still has some pressure and I'm being torn apart if I'm to have a kick-butt intercooled OM617 or perfect working R-12 A/C.

The Audi is deeper and smaller overall, I might be able to suqeeze it in a corner, but it would take ALOT of work.

Depends how much you want/need working AC. Here in Boise, we get temps of 100-105F in summer, and no AC would really be a drag. Now in Montana or North Dakota, no problem (especially if the AC is already broken!). I don't think there will be any advantage to the "oversized" intercooler unless your target power gain is well above 20%. If you want 40-50% or more, then yeah, the bigger cooler is probably needed, but so is a custom aftermarket turbocharger, etc etc... is it really worth the effort & cost? Not to mention the probability of bottom end failures increase exponentially as the power output rises (IMO).

Good point.

There are times I wish I had working A/C on my TD, but thats what windows are for. The 240D has manual windows, making it more of a pain in the butt to roll down every time. I guess I'll sell the intercoolers on eBay (Or if somebody here wants one...) and wait for a smaller style intercooler to make a Ridge style system.

Did anyone who has an intercooler ever get around to posting some 0 - 60 times??? I'm interested in seeing the results, particularly on a OM617. And yes, I'm all ready aware of the Finnish Wonder - I'm just looking to see if more modest mods work.

To date, nobody who installed "modest" modifications like this has posted before & after data. Kinda annoying, actually. Especially when some knuckleheads claim it made this huge difference - then won't back it up with numbers.

I agree with your intercooler assessment, however bottom failures are not likely with increased power output.

The only reason failures would occur exponentially would be if you were increasing power by increasing rpm. By increasing power through additional boost you are merely increasing torque without spinning the engine faster. Since the engine is designed to handle high compression already, it has strong rods and pistons - if you don't increase your exhaust temperature much (here comes the intercooler), the additional torque is handled reliably.

If you want a good resource on turbocharging, read "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. He explains the concepts and practice very clearly. I've doubled the power output of my L28ET (Nissan turbo engine-gasser) and been running it for years now.

I decided not to intercool my car this summer. I bought the xenarc headlights to use the DOT headlights to get air flow through the fog lights.

Since I rebuilt my suspension instead and I am not going to do the intercooler project my xenarc lights are for sale.
