Post Spring GTG @ Old Navy's

Dear folk's here on the MB forum twice a year we host a VW diesel GTG here at my house in the little town of Poplar Bluff MO. We will be having it Saturday 19 March and have posted the date's on the VW TDI Club Forum and we generally have a good turn out of people. We do everything from work on cars to general BSing along with stuffing our faces with food. I have been doing this now for about 3 years and Linda & I always enjoy the event.

I would like to invite anyone here who thinks they would like to come and meet some fellow diesel heads to check in here and at the the TDI club link above. We usually have people from 1/2 dozen states roll in and spend the weekend at one of the local motels and some do some sight seeing. This town is sort of the gateway to the Ozarks, with nearby lakes an river resorts (Branson is only a 170 miles from here) motel's often bookup for the weekends early.

There is nothing to bring we provide the food and drink (soft drinks) and if you need a beer or glass of wine with your lunch BYOB just remember this is not to be a drunken bash. We will have a collection plate sitting out to recieve donations to off set expenses. No one has ever left hungry, we will be surving chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, and Bratt's for the main course.

This event will run from whenever the first show up (usually 7- 8 am) till whenever, but generally till about 4-6 pm time frame. The last GTG one TDIer had unexpected engine problem and we didn't get him back on the road (TX) till about 2 am Sunday.

I have a 2 car garage to use to work on cars, but please no major overhauls. If you need help with something or want to do some type of repairs please post it here and on the other forum as well, so we can kind of schedule things. Also bring you some type of folding chair as mine are limited in number.

Here is a link to pictures of the last GTG here.

Kool, will you be coming in the 240D??? I plan on driving to the National VW TDI Club convention in WI next summer. I'll allow two days travel for that trip I guess.

Poplar Bluff GTG

I live in E. Illinois about 250 miles away and have been looking for an area GTG such as yours. Still have relatives in Dexter (the Swingers). Grandsons in Dallas will make this a very feasible stop on the way. Wife does income tax so she may be busy. Weather permitting may be on the smoke green 81RT I bought new. Appreciate your doing this. Joe

I'm going to see if I can convince SWMBO to go. Would be interesting...and of course would be determined if I can have my power loss issue resolved before then.....I can't work on it while salt is on the roads.

Never mind I just did here is what I got:

Total Est. Time: 18 hours, 26 minutes Total Est. Distance: 1186.09 miles

Thats to the comfort in, holy crap thats a long trip. Not as bad as FL but still.

Hmm if we left at 12am Friday morning and drove nonstop we could be at the hotal by 7pm maybe. Hmm long trip but sounds like fun I'll have to think about this one. I have never been out that way so seeing that part of the country could be cool.

Not to mention a quick 2,400 miles on the SDL to get to 250k faster.

Here are the directions for those who need them.

If you are coming from St Louis area take I-55 South to Festus/Crystal City area, (exit 174 I think) then take 67 South about 120 miles to Poplar Bluff. Stay on 67 business/ Westwood Blvd, do not take any exits . About 3/4 mile passed the Dodge dealer, you will come to your first stop light. Take a left at that first light onto Katy Lane. Go up and over the hill at this point Katy lanes becomes Barron Road. Continue on Barron Road to the first stop sign (about 0.9 miles), with water tower on the right. Continue on Barron Rd to the second stop sign, (about 1.0 miles) then turn left onto Main St and go up over the hill to first stop sign (about 0.3 miles), then turn right onto Wilcox Road. Take Wilcox Road up over the hill (about 0.2 mile's) and at the first street to the right, (there is a yellow sign with arrows pointing left and right) turn right onto Avondale. Go past one house to the first street to the right and turn right. We are second house on the left. Look for gaggle of VW's and at least one old MB.

If coming south from IL or the NE area of the US, take I-57 to US 60 to Poplar Bluff (I-57 just becomes US 60 in MO), and if coming by I-55 go to the I-55 & US 60 interchange at Sikeston MO. Take the 60 West exit to Poplar Bluff, approx 52 miles. At the second Poplar Bluff exit take the second exit for business 67S/Westwood Blvd. Once on business 67S you will pass the local Dodge/Jeep dealer, proceed about 3/4 mile passed the Dodge dealer, you will come to your first stop light. Take a left at that first light onto Katy Lane. Go up and over the hill, at this point Katy lanes becomes Barron Road. Look for gaggle of VW's and at least one old MB sedan.

If coming in from the south of town on Hwy 67N (as some of you AR boys are) Take the 3rd Poplar Bluff exit. You will pass the local Dodge/Jeep dealer at this off ramp, proceed about 3/4 mile passed the Dodge dealer, you will come to your first stop light. Take a left at that first light onto Katy Lane. Go up and over the hill at this point Katy Lane becomes Barron Road. Look for gaggle of VW's and at least one old MB sedan.

If coming in from the west, go to Springfield MO, and from there take US Highway 60 E to Poplar Bluff. It is all 4 lane except about 30 or 40 miles of the 190 miles to Poplar Bluff. You will take Hwy 60 W to the intersection of 60 & 67, at that point you will take the first exit (60E & 67S) and head south about 8 miles. You will come to an interchange, do not take any exits. You will pass the local Dodge and Jeep dealer, proceed about 3/4 mile passed the Dodge dealer, you will come to your first stop light. Look for gaggle of VW's and at least one old MB sedan.

For those going straight to the motel, go past the first light and the Super8 is on the right, next to the McDonald's and you have to turn into the McD's lot to get to Super8. The other motels are on down the road about a 1/4 mile on the left.

Just down the road about 3/4 mile and on same side as McD's & K-Mart is the Bluff Inn. Once close to Poplar Bluff, be careful using Mapquest and such, you might add miles & time to the trip.

If you have any questions just ask.
