A little history on the the Daewoo President...MB was contracted by Daewoo Motors (at the time, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daewoo Corp.) to do the design and duly compensated for their effort. As you mention, it suffered from ill handling due to the fact that all of the engineering was done in house by Korean Daewoo. Thats not to say that Korean engineering is bad as they have some of the lowest priced, best warrantied cars on the road, but...

General Motors. Thats who the Koreans had learned from at the time.

What you ended up with is an MB body on, say, the frame of a Buick. No wonder the results were less than stellar.

As far as a copy though, if you are paid to do a design, I don't think that counts. They also paid the Italian design house of Gugario (sp?) for the design of the Esperro.

On the other hand you have the Japaneese who have been blatantly ripping off MB for years. I think Lexus is probably the biggest offender. If you are going to use someone elses design, at least COMPENSATE and CREDIT them.

My beloved SLK may not always be the "latest" or the "greatest", but it will always be the first and original. A fleet of Lexi (he he) can never change that. Paul.
