Top Secret: Autoblog visits Speed Racer sound recording session

click above image for gallery of shots from our taping session When a friend calls you up and asks if you can meet him at a deserted military base around 7 AM on a Sunday morning, you have to ask yourself how good a friend they really are. Quick check: Do we owe him money? Nah. The invitation happened to come from someone with deep connections to both Hollywood and the Southern California car community (organizes Motor4Toys and Supercar Sunday at VCR), so the promise that we would be glad we came was eminently believable. Our mission was to tell no one and drive out to the shuttered Marine base where everything would be made clear. We did as we were told and arrived early at this facility that sits in the shadow of the fire-scorched Orange County foothills. Seasonal Santa Ana winds have left a lot of loose debris and dust on the tarmac, which makes it a not-so-nice place for drag racing, but perfect for today's agenda: to lay down some engine audio tracks for the new Speed Racer movie. As we arrived at the heart of the airbase, we could clearly hear the call of an assemblage of cars that had been assembled to stand in for the Mach 5 and its competitors. This was going to be fun. Follow the jump for the rest of the story and check out the gallery below, too. Big thanks to our buddy Duane Steiner of SoCalSpeedZone for sharing some of his video, as well!
