here's a quick cut and paste of story

BN 15:04 Mercedes Reduces U.S. Base Price for New E-Class Car (Update1)

Mercedes Reduces U.S. Base Price for New E-Class Car (Update1)

(Adds background on new E-Class, competitors starting in
fifth paragraph. Updates share price.)

Los Angeles, Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- DaimlerChrysler AG's
Mercedes-Benz reduced the U.S. starting price of the new E-Class
sedan $1,500, or 3.1 percent, as the third-largest U.S. luxury-
vehicle brand seeks to gain on rivals.
The redesigned 2003 E-320 sedan will begin at $46,950, down
from $48,450 for the previous model, said David Schembri, U.S.
vice president of marketing for Mercedes. The new sedan, which
goes on sale Monday, adds features such as electronic braking,
Schembri said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles.
Mercedes, which provides most of DaimlerChrysler's profit
while the Chrysler and Freightliner units try to end losses, is
vying with Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and Toyota Motor Corp.'s
Lexus for the 2002 U.S. luxury-sales lead. This year through July,
BMW sold 136,825 cars and light trucks, followed by Lexus at
135,847 and Mercedes at 117,864, according to Autodata Corp.
The new E-Class ``is an important product because it's high
volume and high price,'' said Prudential Securities Inc. analyst
Michael Bruynesteyn, who rates DaimlerChrysler a ``hold'' and
doesn't own the shares. ``The biggest question is whether they cut
costs enough because their margins have been slipping overall.''
Mercedes will have 2,200 of the new sedans available for sale
in the first week and expects to ship 5,000 in September, Schembri
said. The company expects to sell 50,000 of the new version next
year, he said. Pricing for the new E500 sedan, the most expensive
E-Class model, starts at $54,850, Schembri said.
Competitors include the BMW 5-series, which ranges from
$36,595 to $55,845, and Lexus models that cost from $32,080 for ES
models to $47,980 for a GS 430, according to Edmunds.com, a Web
site that track vehicle prices.
BMW and Lexus are expected to finish the year with U.S. sales
of about 248,000 cars and trucks each, with Mercedes at 226,600,
auto forecasting company DRI-WEFA estimates.
Stuttgart, Germany-based DaimlerChrysler's U.S. shares fell
$1.20 to $45.71 at 3:01 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite
trading. The shares have risen 9.7 percent this year.

fad, agreed re w210 pricings. check carsdirect.com for good way to gauge a particular model's demand over a course of time. i used it to track a few cars and one reason i pulled the trigger on current e-class is that steep discounts were starting to fade , esp 4matics , due to delay in w211 awd.

earlier in year , w210s were shown offered at 2500 UNDER INVOICE , and that includes the vig the dlrs must have to pay the web site , too. i think now they're at about 1000-1500 over invoice. looks like dlrs are already moving these out. and i think they'll even get a little stingy on the 4matics come the colder weather...

i cant vouch for the actual transactions thru the site, as i bought mine thru indep dlr , btw - 6k on clock and close to 10k off MSRP , with out-of-state del included.

thanks , j.
