What does the 3-pointed star symbolize?

I never knew the answer to this, and I still wonder how much truth is in it, but the December 2007 Issue of Mercedes Enthusiast says,

"It may seem a tenuous link, but Mercedes-Benz would not exist without the ambitious dreams of two men over a century ago, the first car, the Benz Patent Motorwagen changing daily life for ever. Indeed the three-pointed star itself represents dreams becoming reality, the three fields of engineering pioneered by Daimler (air, land, and sea) - an original four-pointed star including lunar exploration apparently ditched, then seen as one dream too far."

I did not know that; thought I would share and possible enlighten.

Correct.. Air,Land, and Sea

the 4 pointed star is still a registered trademark.. In my books on the history of the Mercedes Benz brand no where does it mention space exploration... (4 pointed star)

Benz and Daimler.. the ones that started it all

Thanks for the information.

I always thought the Star meant that you were going to pay extra for parts, get a higher quote when someone gives you an estimate to do work at your house, and bigger chance of someone pulling out in front of you.
This has been my experience.

I don't think I'd trust a MB space ship, I'd get a Lexus one...

Mercedes stars developed in 1909

Yes, the three and four pointed stars were developed in 1909, by Daimler and others, to signify the "rising star" which Mercedes cars represented. Both were copyrighted, but the three pointed star became the symbol and that was combined with the Benz Laurel Wreath symbol to form the modern image. The land, sea and air motif was the basis for the three points .... Ben Carter

That's the meaning they DON'T put in books about Mercedes. I guess they assume everyone already knows that.

No way! I would trust a MB spaceship over a Lexus any day, provided that it was built in the 1980's and had a 617 rocket engine in it

After all what did Princess Vespa drive in "Spaceballs"? a Lexus? No way. She had a MB -- ..."got it at a big discount, my brother in law is a dealer..." -- King Roland

The "Star" is a daily reminder for the employees: You start work at eight, lunch is at noon, and 4 is quitting time.

That reminds me of those old Dr. Pepper commercials, "Drink Dr Pepper at ten, two, and four." Okay, I know I'm dating myself since they're probably from the sixties.

Land, sea and air ...

due to the fact that the company at onetime built engines for marine and aircraft applications as well as land vehicles.

I'd give credit to the author if I could remember who he is.

The tri-star logo is getting a "makeover" soon. In future printings, the logo will not have the lines in the spokes which make it appear three dimensional. The new logo will have a flat appearance and will be used in all corporate publications.

OLD

NEW

In media ads, starting November 1, 2007, Mercedes will also be adding a "acoustic logo" using a sound as described:

"The Mercedes-Benz sound logo is based on an original recording of an English boys choir from the 1990s. Sound engineers extracted a choir boy's solo vocal from the recording and adapted it for use in the sound logo
