Brandon314159 was nice enough to make a new DIY page for us fortunate MBers. I'm not home right now so it'll be a couple weeks before I update the webpage itself and edit it into this thread.

Here's the new link on how to install euros on a W126.
http://brandon.importtransmissionexchange.com/benz_files/lights.htm

Thanks for your contribution Brandon.

Have a happy new year all,

Well I added quite a few more links today, I also made an auto forwarder so the address is shorter. It can be reached by www.diy.1baddsm.com this will forward you to the this webpage. Furthermore the amount of bandwidth to load the main page is about 40% of what was required before even with the additional pictures and text.

Edit- I went through and found & fixed basically all the bad links on the site whether in the DIY section or the base site itself. I never realized there were so many, several due to using \ and not / in the addresses.

Did anyone save any of Richard Easley's tech links? I came across his page earlier in the weeking looking to adjust my boost pressure, and in turn found this forum. Today I attempt to go back to his page so I can do the procdure and its gone! Just about every link to his site on the DIY page is not working.

I added a few more pages that aren't listed above. I actually found a few more again today but lost where the site was, I'll have to go hunt that down again.

I just bought a 1978 Mercedes 300D in pretty good shape for just $400! It even has the original first aid kit and manual. I do have a few problems, any help would be great.

My seats need rebuilding BAD! Any sources for replacement covers? Any clue when the tutorial will be finished?

Take off power is really slow, any tips to increase performance?

The engine wont shut off when the switch is in the off position, but if I remove the vacuum line under the hood and suck on it the engine will die. Is this the pump or a blockage or leak in the line?

Thanks!

The unfortunate truth of the seat rebuild page is that the pictures turned out so dismal (very dark) that I debated if it was worthwhile to even build the page.

In a nutshell you unbolt it, slide it back so it gets off the safety belt thing. Then carry it out of the car, carefully pop the side covers off without breaking them. Unbolt the 2 bolts on each side to take the back off of the seat. The back has one screw in the bottom, take that out and slide the back off. You can see there are a few bands holding the middle in and on the bottom there is a lip that holds the fabric in. Apply pressure to the front and pop it out the back. Now this same type setup is used on the seat bottom, just push down on it and roll it out of the lip. You'll notice it doesn't come right off, you have to undo the hog rings. I just used some needlenose pliers.

I'm not sure what can be done for the natural aspired 300D in regards to performance.

Sounds like a leak in the line. Just have to get a mityvac going and see what you can find. It goes from the main line through a T then into the firewall, to the switch, then back out to the shutoff valve in the IP.

Thanks for the tips! Any clue as to where I can get replacement seat covers? Or am I pretty much on my own there?

Performance Products sells them but the quality is debateable from what I've heard, they are not OE. I also believe they are a bit overpriced on it, if you bought stuff from them in the past you can get occasional 10 or 15% off coupons in the mail from time to time.

no good deed...

Bless you BoostnBenz - your web page with diy help is fantastic - and obviously took a good deal of time and effort to set up and maintain.

But... under the heading of no good deed goes unpunished - I'm suffering a problem with my clutch. I have a manual 240D ('83) and the clutch hydraulics have died. I've been looking through the web and on my service manual cd - but can't find anything on replacement/rebuild of the master/slave cylinder. Is the job so trivial that anyone can do it? or is it just that there are few manual trannies out there?

Many thanks for any suggestions you can offer (and for the great web page)

DT

For those who have heart failure at the MB parts counter when the invoice comes try this;

When I rebuilt my son's 1975 115/300d I made a list of all the parts I needed. I then went through all the various MB parts catalogs (Preformance, Adsitco, etc.), some on line suppliers, and anyone, short of Ebay, I could find that had parts. I wrote down all the prices and then went to the MB parts counter. I told them that I was going to buy these parts, about $1,500 worth, and that I would prefer to buy them locally and to get OE parts. I asked how close to these prices they could come. The parts guy said that if I called myself "XYZ Restoration Co." he would give me a dealer's discount and with that discount he could meet most prices and beat some. I did and he did.

Now I have an account at the local MB palace, get OE MB parts at a reasonable price and have some to yell at when I get the wrong part. Plus I don't pay shipping.

Granted the parts man is very nice and willing to work with me to get my business, which I understand is not the case in most instances. Still for a 40% savings and no shipping is might be worth the effort. Plus many parts men know a lot about or can find out the answer to many of your mechanical problems.

kip, I do the same thing but I buy through a legitimate business name though. Do you pay tax on the parts you buy? If you don't now, you should start. The dealer keeps records of those that don't pay tax incase they're ever auditted.

Thanks
David

drradon,

Repairing the clutch hydraulic system isn't rocket science.

If you want to do it the easiest but most expensive way, you buy a new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder and R&R them.

If you want to do it the most economical way, you get repair kits and rebuild the cylinders yourself. You need a small hone to resurface the bore in both cylinders.

To prime the system, you connect a hose from the left front brake caliper bleed screw to the bleed screw of the slave cylinder, loosen both bleed screws and pump the brake pedal to pump brake fluid thru both cylinders of the clutch system. After the fluid fills the clutch system, close both bleed screws and remove the hose. While filling the clutch hydraulic system, make sure the brake reservoir does not run out of brake fluid.

FYI: Usually the brake and clutch hydraulic systems use the same reservoir so the over flow from the clutch system will refill the common reservoir so you can't pump too much.
